Hi Laura, He was born in 1796 (according to his tombstone). He died in December 1862. Unfortunately, I do not have a death record (which would certainly help!) since Michigan did not require death records be kept until several years after that point. I have a similar problem with the birth of his grandson, who is my GGrandfather - he was born before birth certificates were required (at least I have HIS death certificate). I've tried the state and county (just in case) and am a member of Ancestry.com, but have been unable to find a definite link to Abraham Sneden Jr. or any death info on Abraham or Catherine other than in posted (unsourced) family trees. Do you have his death record from Kent County, or did he die somewhere else? Do you know what year he died? -----Original Message----- From: mi-genealogy-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mi-genealogy-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of cssnowstar@cs.com Sent: Monday, July 27, 2009 6:48 PM To: mi-genealogy@rootsweb.com Subject: [MI-GENEALOGY] TRYING TO CONNECT MY GGGGrandfather Sneden to his Parents Hi everyone, My Great great great grandfather Benjamin Sneden, who settled in Kent County prior to the 1860 census, reputedly came from New York. Michigan census data confirms a New York birth. He came to Michigan via Huron County, Ohio (where my GGGrandfather Herman was born according to his Civil War enlistment papers) and Wood County, Ohio, where his first wife (my ggggrandmother) died, as did one of his sons. He remarried while in Wood County. The second wife is buried with him in Michigan (although his name is also listed on my ggggrandmother's tombstone). Here's my issue. I BELIEVE (note the verb -- I have no proof) that his parents were Abraham Sneden (alt spelling Sneeden) Jr. & his wife Catherine. I can't find them in the Ohio census records or the New York census records. I don't know when they might have arrived in Ohio. There are family trees on line which indicate that they died in Ohio in approximately 1846 (not necessarily Wood County). I can't find death records on them. I'm a member of both the Wood County and Lorain County branches of the Ohio Genealogical Society but haven't been able to find anything helpful on this subject via that route. Does anybody have anything to suggest on what to try next? I live in Hawaii, so solutions requiring personal visits to locations will not work well.
