Can anyone help me find out how or where I can get information on adoption in the 1910 time period for michigan? My Grandmother, Violet Camele Franklin was given up to the state of Michigan and was adopted by a family who changed her name to Margarie Doris something. Jerry J. Marion, Sr Midland, MI originally now Vidor, TX
Jerry, Was your grandmother in Midland,or somewhere else? I know in the Grand Rapids area there was a rather large orphanage that handled a number of children from my own family and the office, which now is over foster care families, would have records there. If she was in Midland then perhaps you could find out information from the county clerk's office or the local library, as to the name of the place she was at and you might be able take it from there. It's a place to start. While I'm not sure of the letter of the law, some of these records are sealed, but I don't know if there's a time limit to it. Something else-how old was she at the time of adoption? If she was in school, perhaps there are school records that can be located? Stanton, Michigan, the current county seat for Montcalm Co. had it's own children's home. The building still stands but it was only recently that I learned the "cool" old house I've admired for years, was the children's home back in the late 1800s-early 1900s. If you could find her in say, the 1910, 1920 or 1930 census, there might be surviving relatives or neighbors that you may be able to find.
