Hi, A relative of mine was apparently born or raised in a bordello in either Michigan or Illinois. Does anyone know any way of researching Michigan houses of ill repute and their occupants or is this a lost cause? Thanks for your help, Teresa Hard things are put in our way, not to stop us, but to call out our courage and strength. - Anonymous
Teresa The birth record (might!) give the address but doubtful. Census would not show this. About the only place that you might find anything would be court and police records. Possible! The oldest profession in the world has always been illegal here in the US and therefore only police blotters and court records might have any info for you. I commend you for posting this as too many people would have always wondered and stopped their search at the point of the word bordello. I really hope you find something to continue on with. Best to you! Hi. A great aunt of mine, was said to have been a madam for one of these "houses". Upstairs, she had a hall with rooms off of it. Each door had a number on it. I guess this is how she kept things straight? It may have been shown on census records as a "boarding" house. I'm sure they weren't listed as a bordello. Prohibition was rampant as were the speak easys back then. Chances are if you knew the area, some census records show the name of the street, written on the side. If it's listed as a boarding house, you might find who you're looking for. Where this neighborhood was, is now a parking lot for a college in Grand Rapids. Good luck.
