Jann, When you looked through the 1870 census, did you try spelling variations? Second idea is research the census for other states. Many families were disrupted during the Civil War and were forced to relocate for a variety of reasons. I would look to the state or states where the individuals were born. Also try looking in the 1871 Canadian (Ontario) census.
