We are desperately searching for a connection back to "merry ole" England. We are pretty certain that our Great Grandfather was named 'George' Long and was born in England. That he immigrated to Canada, from England, before 1850. He married our Great Grandmother, 'Agnes Armet', who was born in Canada. They produced at least one child…who they named 'George Washington' Long…our Grandfather. 'George Washington' Long was born 30 Mar 1851…we strongly believe, in or round-about Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We know of no siblings of our Grandfather…but we could be surprised. What we are searching for is where in England was our Great Grandfather born? And when was he born? When did he immigrate to Canada? Do we have any connection to the many 'Longs of England'… there were a lot! But we need a link. Any help on this would surely be appreciated.
John If you will go to http://www.rootsweb.com/ you can search through about a bezillion genealogy lists for whatever area you are interested in. In your situation, were I doing it, I'd start with http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/index.html go to the International section and click on Canada That will give you a whole list of areas in Canada to start. Sign up for a list - for example - BRITISH-CANADIAN or CAN-ONT-YORK (which is where Toronto is, in York County, Ontario) Start asking questions there and, when you get enough answers and leads to track back to specific areas of England, do the same thing with the ENGLAND lists. Always remember to give as much helpful information as possible, such as names, DATES!!, parents' names, places, what you have already searched, etc. Then follow up on any leads. And remember to THANK the people who steer you toward more information. Researchers love to share, but not with people who don't acknowledge what they have been given. (You'd be appalled at how many people fail to even say thank you) Good luck and happy hunting. You may be in luck. The Jan/Feb Everton's Genealogical Helper, just received in today's mail, has an article, "Canada is Finally Opening its Immigration Records to the Online Researcher", by Elizabeth LaPointe. She also has a web site, www.GenealogyCanada.com .
