Hi Michiganders, I'd love to be able to track down my paternal immigrants. I know a little about them when they came to MI from Ireland and the Netherlands, but nothing about how or why they came. My grandmother was Jennie Vanderlin (Van der Linde, Van derlinder, Vanderlinda) b. 12 Aug. 1875 in Schoolcraft, MI; Her siblings were Elizabeth, Peter, Martha, possibly Jacob, and 3 other sisters. Her parents were Isaac Van derlinder 1829-1903 & Jane Haisen d 1895, both probably born in Holland, the Netherlands. Can you help me find the rest of Jennie's siblings and where they came from in Holland? Also something about why they might have immigrated from Holland and where they entered the country. My grandfather was Hugh Benedict Cavanaugh 1870-1935, born in Ada, MI. His siblings were May (probably born in Ireland) 1866-1955, Mary b 1868 in MI, Ellen b. 1872, and Nellie 1878-1958; His parents were our Irish immigrants (1867??), Ann Doyle 1844-1910 and Thomas F. Cavanaugh 1834-1896. I would love to know where Thomas and Ann came from in Ireland, where they entered the US, and something about why they would have come in the late 1800's. Many thanks for any suggestions you have. Ann Cavanaugh Deupree (born in Grand Rapids 1935)
Ann, This is a long shot but many - or most - of the Irish immigrants that made it into Michigan came through Quebec, Canada from Ireland. In the 1850s and onward lots of the passed through what is now Thomas Township and Wheeler Township in Gratiot County, MI. There were so many that the area was referred to as "Irishtown," possibly meant to be a bigoted inference given the anti-Irish sentiments of the late and early 19th & 20th centuries. In Richland Township (Hemlock) just south of there, was a whole bunch of Doyle's. I believe the progenitor of the line was Andrew Doyle who was an important figure in the community and the Postmaster. Well, that's my shotgun blast and hopefully it will hit something. Best wishes for success in your genealogical forays! Sincerely, Kevin O'Brien Laguna Hills, California ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ann H.
