My grandfather -- Jan (John) Welsand -- was born in Poland in 1852. He came to Detroit (or possibly Chicago where he may have stayed briefly) after 1878, I think. I have found a record of his son Edmund Welsand who died in 1985 in Detroit. I cannot find any other information about him even though I have "heard" that he was one of the founders of St. Albertus catholic church and a founder of the Dziennik Polski -- a Detroit Polish language newspaper begun in 1904.
