    3. Dear John, I live in Osceola county, Michigan. An not sure where Park Lake is at but I only live a few miles from Marion and if you would like I could see if I could find her grave and take pics for you. McBain is also not very far from me. Maybe about eight miles or so. McBain is also in another county, Missaukee county but the counties are so close that she could have live in the McBain area and close to Marion. Let me know if I can help you out any. I will be glad to do it because everyone on the sites have been so good to me that I am so glad to help someone out. 2. OK..so to sum up...the thing you are searching for is the birth of George Washington Long, born abt March 1851 in Toronto; mother was Agnes Armet (could this possibly be ARNOTT). You do not know his father's name? George?married Lydia Fluellen Parks in Saginaw Mi in 1884. They divorced in 1901 Do you know if George was ever married before or after Lydia? Where was George's residence after the divorce? Do you know when he died? Or where? I have searched Ancestry & Family Search as well as some of the early Canadian census, but I dit not find any new info. Maybe if you could locate a death cert, it would help. I could search for you in Saginaw County if that is where he lived or died. Karin

Now, Lydia was my granny; and, my route back to the landing at lymouth. So, the Mayflower Society should have a copy of their M/C in heir achieves. Or, Saginaw County should have a copy of such ertificate. My 1st step is to beg, borrow or steal …maybe even buy… a opy of this M/C. I hope it doesn’t just say “born Canada…parents nspecifi ed”… but with my luck……? Optimistically, this document should give me his father’s 1st name; other’s maiden name… and hopefully… a little more than “born Canada.” ouldn't that be nice? 3. Thank you for your replies to my enquiry. Yes, I can see how logging (and subsequently farming), and the availability of work land would entice people across. Of course they were also moving away from the UK and its Dominions (and all the social and religious strictures thereof!!) to a new and very different country. The Samains (MD > NY > MI) bought land on the Michigan-Toledo Strip and the family were mainly, but not entirely, farmers or married into farming families. The Wastells (through Canada) were nonconformists and the father, W.P. Wastell (born London 1804), was a minister in the Congregational Church in Port Huron. Most of that settling family worked in stores and offices. Two Wastell sons, born in Canada, moved on to California, but both Samains & Wastells tended to remain in Michigan. David

    3. Dear All, I believe the last time I posted a comment on the list I followed John Long's "Best Available Data" - a maxim I frequently use. My enquiry (from Norwich, England) is why did so many people travel to MI from Canada? I can see the geographical proximity would make such a move relatively straight forward and I am sure residents in MI would not be surprised that people set up home in their State, But I wondered whether there were any other inducements to settle there. I have two families in MI: the Samains who came through MD to NY in 1825 and then on to Washtenaw in 1835 and then later to Ionia; and the Wastells who came through Guelph, Ontario to St Clair and Lenawee in about 1845. Many of the group seem to have some Canadian roots and I was curious.... All best wishes, David

    3. When my ancestors and their friends came over, they came for land and lumbering and work.   Many of them started in the thumb area of Michigan, and later moved farther north, into Iosco county and Alcona county, and Alpena county.  Those were lumbering areas, and after lumbering died out, they farmed that same land.  I also think the great expanse of land was in itself, enticing.  You could travel for miles and miles, and there always seemed to be more land.  And it didn't cost much.  myra herron, descendant of the Meddaughs, Herrons, Links, Spauldings, etc. --- On Sun, 5/24/09, David Seddon <dandmj@waitrose.com> wrote: From: David Seddon <dandmj@waitrose.com> Subject: [MI-GENEALOGY] Immigration from Canada To: mi-genealogy@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, May 24, 2009, 3:19 PM Dear All, I believe the last time I posted a comment on the list I followed  John Long's  "Best Available Data" - a maxim I frequently use.
