Hello, I've spent a week working on a "KIDDER family" mystery. I started it a couple years ago and am working on it again. It involves 2 Joseph KIDDER "teens" who were cousins, and both seem to have fought in the Revolutionary War as teens. One was Joseph, son of Francis, of MA, and the other, Joseph, Jr., of NH. The problem is that one seems to have died in Saratoga, NY, in 1777, and one seems to have survived and went to Temple, NH, to marry and have children. The "KIDDER book" says that it was Joseph, son of Francis, who survived and moved to Temple where he married Huldah STILES in 1795. And, very little is known about Joseph, Jr., "of Temple." I've gone over all my notes this week, and my "hunch" is that the researchers in the 1800's confused the 2 boys and that it was Joseph, Jr., who married Huldah. To get to the Michigan part of the story, Joseph and Huldah KIDDER had 6 children who survived, 3 sons and 3 daughters. Their first son, Asa KIDDER, married in NY to Maria BURBANK. Asa and Maria KIDDER were probably in NY State for a while, but they seem to have moved to Michigan at some point. Their first child, George KIDDER, died as a teen in NY in 1850. Their 2nd child, Stella KIDDER, married in 1862 in NY to James M. SERVOSS. But, the "KIDDER book" says that James and Stella SERVOSS lived in Marshall, Calhoun Co., MI. I checked census data last night, and I found the couple in Paw Paw, Van Buren, MI, in 1870. And, Asa and Betsey KIDDER, are living beside them. The book says that James and Stella SERVOSS had twins in 1806, George and Bessie. But in 1870 there was only George. But, in 1880, there is George, 13, and a younger sister, Bessie, 6. I couldn't find this family in 1900 - anywhere, including the SERVOS spelling. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this family. One tidbit of information which would help me to find out which Joseph KIDDER back in NH died in 1777 and which one married Hulda - is finding the corrent name of Asa KIDDER's father. By the way, Asa and Maria ("Betsey??") KIDDER had a 3rd child, Edna C. KIDDER, b1839. She seems to have never married and was a teacher. She is found living with her parents in Paw Paw in 1870 and 1880. Asa is listed as a wagon maker. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (on Lists for 8 years; now an Administrator of 8 Lists, including CAN-USA-Migration) FYI: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/1255/1255.htm There is much discussion on the Lists about "Geocities" closing down. If you go to Yahoo's home page, you should be able to find the latest information on that. George Kidder in FL is working on getting his web site to another place !
Dear Cecelia, Thank you for you kind message. I hate to see someone's family pics being for sale like that but I know if I don't buy them and they may just get thrown away and I can't stand for that to happen when there are family out there looking for anything on their ancestors and they might just be theirs. I would hope someone would find pics of my family would retrieve them. Usually they don't charge much for the pics so isn't any big deal there. But just like to find the family they belong too. Thank you again for your kind words. vivian ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cecelia K Parks" <ckparks54@yahoo.com> To: <mi-genealogy@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 01, 2009 6:41 PM Subject: [MI-GENEALOGY] Recovered pictures Thank you Vivian for posting your article about the found pictures. In the Mecosta co. or surrounding areas. We were at a yard sale yesterday in Big Rapids and I found a scrap book that they were selling and found four pictures in the book. Didn't know why they were selling them unless they found them a house that they bought. The first picture looks to be about maybe in the very late 1800's to the early 1900's as the dresses are knee length. There is a log cabin behind them with a barn next to it. There is two men and two women with a child about 3or 4 years of age. and on the back is written grandpa and grandma Benkerski or Benherski and Aunt Hattie, Vernon or Veron, Char Slakajlys. It is hard to read the writting so maybe actually spelled differently. Two of the other pics are senior pictures one of Tom Stefonek 1964 and Bernard Schulz graduate 1949. And the last picture is a group pic of Rhinelander's Junior High School Band. Class of 1949/1950. If anyone who maybe related to these families please let me know and I will give you the pictures. I did not want them to get throw out as so many do. Sorry that this is so long. Vivian Brandal ***************************** The theme of this list is Michigan genealogy and research. The spelling of Jack's last name is Schaupp. It was a sad day when the bakery closed. It was centrally placed in the small town of Clio where I grew up. My parents and grandparents were friends of the Schaupp family. My grandmother was a life-long friend of Margaret Schaupp beginning when they were both girls in St. Charles. Thanks but no, Florence Sanford's parents were either George Edward William Sanford or William Sanford and Bertha. Some one said Bertha's maiden name was Foster. I have not confirmed that as of yet. I am sorry I have not used this site before. Simon Press was born in Markham Ontario Canada and was married to Mary Ann Rumohr or Remore. The family came to Michigan some time around 1875 and we have his death in Michigan. His wife Mary Ann Rumohr death 5 Jan 1882 Fairgrove Tuscola Michigan . They had 8 children which one of them is my great grandfather Francis W Press birth is 23 May 1873 Ontarion Canada, death 4 March Ellington Tuscola Michigan. Came to USA around 1875 - 1877 and he was married to Mary Bell Benjamin of Almer Twp Tuscola Caro Michigan. Her parents were George Benjamin birth in Geauge Ohio and his death 11 May 1913 in Columbia Tuscola Co Michigan and his wife was Lura Bardwell she was born in New York Nov 1853 and I have no death on her, but found on your site their marriage and some of their childrens marriages. So thank you for having that, I was tickled to find it. Francis and Mary Bell Benjamin had 6 children that we found. And it looks like all were born in Michigan some in Caro Michigan. My grandfather Harry Press being one of their children. I was born in Michigan, but no longer live there so it is hard for me to get some info. I do know that many of the Press family is buried I belive in Caro Michigan, my mother said they would go to the cemetery when they would go to some big fair there. She said they had a section with the graves and gravestones, said it was old. I have alot of info on the Press family and those who married into it, and pictures if any one would be interested. I looked for a place to add some photos to your site but did not see where I could. Also have census and some other data on them. Also have tree on ancestry. Thank You Debbie debbastra@yahoo.com
