I'm sorry Bob! In the 1910 census for Nichols it states Michigan and in the 1920 it states Missouri. I don't know which is right. I thank you so much for taking the time to look into it for me. Again, I am so sorry for my mistake in getting the two places mixed up. Hi: I am just learning about these GenWeb sites and came across this email list. Here is what I have: John R. NICHOLS Born: Iowa I have his wife and child's name from a 1910 & 1920 census. I am looking for who John R. NICHOLS parents are and on the census for the above two years it states his parents were born in Missouri. I know this isn't much information to go on but it is all I have. Candi
Hi everyone I just started a new website called Blacksheep Ancestors. It's a Directory of Links for Prison & Convict Records, Court Records, Executions, Famous Outlaws, Bandits & Criminals. I have some links that may be of interest for Michigan. It's at http://blacksheepancestors.com/usa/michigan.shtml If you have a Blacksheep ancestor (or think you might have) be sure to check this site out. Because it's new there might be some glitches but I'll get better as I go along. I'm planning to get more records of prisoners and other institutional records in the 19th and 20th centuries as time allows. -- Tyler S. BlackSheep Ancestors http://blacksheepancestors.com/
Rob, Thanks for this information. The links worked fine too. You might see if you can find Lutheran church records (since according to your city directory entry, he printed Lutheran books). Also, printers tend to leave a paper trail, so look for books published by the "Lutheran Book Concern" or whatever it was called. Maybe there's some history of him or his family as publishers. Also, try getting a Michigan death record for him. They start in 1867. Start with the year he disappears from the city directory. He might have been Henrik or Heiki or something close to Henry. (Usually these just list country of origin, but you never know, they might name a city or town.) Look at Michigan Archives site, they have some of the naturalization indices online. Look by county. >1902 so that cant be .she was already here. I find no record of Henry >born 1846 in any census records . I suggest you use Stephen Morse's Ellis Island search tool on http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ if you haven't already. Try the white form for non-jewish passengers. Your search can include the year and ship name if you want. I find an Anna Karpinen in 1902, a Johanna Karvonen in 1902, and Johanna Karhunen in 1900, all Finnish, though none of these says anything about heading for Michigan. I don't know how old your Johanna might be, but one of these could be her. Hi I did some figuring and my Henry would have been 71 years old in 1917 So this is probably not him.He and his wife are listed in passenger and passport list as coming toHancock michigan in 1904 from Finland with children but they are not named. I thought my great grandmother Johanna Karppinen Fraki came with him but she was married in Hancock Michigan in 1902 so that cant be .she was already here. I find no record of Henry born 1846 in any census records . I cant find them at the Elis Island site. and I can find no record of Johanna in any passenger or passport lists. So I dont know when or how or if she came with someone. Also I can find no record of her Husband Isaac Fraki in any passenger passport or ships records coming from Finland I did find one that he was on the Cymric from liverpool to New York but cant find it at Ellis Island site. Anyway to make a long story short ( I know to late) I do not know how my great grandmother Johanna came to USA or how her Father Henry came exactly or where he went after he got here except that it was in Hancock or that area. Also I did find a Jacob fraki In ellis Island records.
