    1. 1872 burial location & newspaper death article
    2. Doug Caldwell
    3. This question has to do with Mecosta County genealogy and a possible death newspaper article of 1872 in Mecosta or Big Rapids or Hillsdale County or Missaukee County or Lake City or Cadillac or Grand Rapids. My great great grandfather John Caldwell from Ireland died in Big Rapids on 24 December 1872. At the time he lived in Litchfield, Hillsdale County. At the time his 2 eldest sons (Thomas & John Jr) had homesteads in Missaukee County. Otherwise there is no connection of my Caldwell family to Big Rapids or the Mecosta County area. I am trying to figure why my great great grandfather was in Big Rapids at the time; other than perhaps going back to Hillsdale County after visiting his sons in the Lake City area of Missaukee County. I would guess that lake City did not have a hospital for the sick. Was Big Rapids bigger than Cadillac at this time? Would it have had better medical facilities (e.g. a hospital)? Can NOT find where John Caldwell is buried. Apparently John Caldwell is buried in Big Rapids; that I have not been able to find so far...... It could be ......... I just can not find proof..... The Michigan death index GENDIS does shows his death record. What cemetery would be a logical choice? Is it on-line? Would someone be able to look up in the logical cemetery to find John Caldwell if he is in fact buried in Big Rapids? Would there be an obituary on John Caldwell in the Big Rapids local newspaper of the time of 1872? What hospital was going at this time? Would there be archived doctor's records? Would there be a newspaper article about "a stranger died in Big Rapids" in some paper just after December 24th, 1872 ?? All my other Caldwell relatives are buried in the Caldwell cemetery in Missaukee County (Arlene); EXCEPT for my great great grandfather John Caldwell (Sr). Need help in finding where he is buried (Michigan someplace unknown; maybe in Big Rapids; maybe near here). He lived in Jonesville/Litchfield in Hillsdale County at the time, however he is NOT buried anywhere in the Hillsdale County. His wife Jane (Thompson) Caldwell however is in the Sand Creek cemetery in Hillsdale County. The family lived in the Jonesville / Litchfield area; Hillsdale County. Thanks for any help or ideas.... 3. Nancy and Carolyn, You are absolutely right! I knew someone would know. I'll bet that the original document said Senile decay, but when the clerk transcribed it, the 'ni' became 'm' and the last 'e' looked like an 'i'. Thanks for solving this for me. 1. Michigan missing deed
    2. No, It's not a lost family fortune. My Mother RUTH KALTEICH had the deed for many years. It was given to her when she and her sister left an orphanage in Chicago Ill.  When I was 14 I saw the deed and remember some of what it said. It is true the Governor of Michigan gave the piece of land to my GGrandfather OTTO KALTEICH & MARIA for helping with the epidemic in Michigan. I remember reading the dimensions of a lot, smaller than an acre. It was described as being lake frontage on Presque Isle, MI. I remember reading that it was tax free forever and ever (perpetuity) never to be sold. At the time I didn't know what that word meant, so I asked my Mom and she explained. Many years later my Aunt DORTHEY KALTEICH-COLE kept the deed and when she died in Napa, California the deed was lost. I can't tell you why my Mother did nothing about it other than the fact that she had bad memories of being in the North east and it was very cold.   Since the property passed down to my Aunts children as well as me and my 2 sisters we thought that was too many heads to get to agree as to what to do with it. No one had any money to pursue it so I was just happy knowing that I had ancestors that contributed to a good cause.   Hard to believe? Yes, but I did say it was a strange story. Had I not seen the deed I may have wondered? But it is real. I'M 60 years old now and still I keep saying I should dig deeper to find out more history about those times in Michigan. I can't really pin point a date, except that a marriage record was found for OTTO KALTEICH and ANNA MARIE MUELLER m. St. Louis, MO. May 1, 1869.  Then 17 years later they raised a boy named OSCAR KALTEICH (my Grandfather). We've never been able to find a birth record. On his death record MARIE's name as maiden is: PULTE. That info. has just come to me a few days ago from my cousin in Germany. I had never heard of that name before then. I don't know how long they stayed in Mo. or when they went to Mi. but I know they practiced medicine in the Chicago, Ill. area for many years. I thought OTTO was buried in the HESS or HESSVILLE CEMETERY that I understand use to be a part of Chicago, but no longer. I think it's now HESSVILLE, IN. However I can't find it. Or where ANNA MARIE MUELLER or PULTE (whichever it really was) is buried either. I keep thinking Michigan has more to tell me about my ancestors in those early times so I'll keep searching and maybe before I die, I'll learn the mystery of the elusive land on Presque Isle. Thank you for your interest and reply. Any information will be gratefully appreciated. If I do find out more I'll let you know. Patricia Patforshort@aol.com

    2. I meant the state of TEXAS, look up for the surname MARVIN. wooooooops. I did not know TEXAS was also in Michigan. But, then again this is a Michigan message link. DUMMY ME! So, since I'M here I'll ask. I am looking for surnames in Michigan also. KALTEICH, PULTE. Also can anyone tell me where the records are kept for property that was given to a person from the state of Michigan, tax free in perpetuity, that can never be sold, but just handed down to family members after death. I know that sounds strange but that was what happened to my Great Grandparents, OTTO and MARIE KALTEICH for services rendered during the flu epidemic in Michigan in the late 1800s early 1900, not really sure of the date. I'M not even sure who the Governor was then. I am starting from scratch on this quest so, any information will be appreciated. Patricia patforshort@aol.com

    2. Glad you received the items ok. No reimbursement necessary, I go to the State of Michigan Library often and it didn't take long to find the article. A thought on finding her middle name - did you try the Social Security Death Index (can be found under Rootsweb.com). Also you or her daughter should be able to see and get copy of her birth and death certificate at the county clerk's offices. County Clerk for Calhoun Co (Battle Creek) is in Marshall, for Ypsilanti - Ann Arbor. The funeral home ususally keeps copy of the death certificate also but the information on the death certificate is only as accurate as the person giving the information. You can also try the Intermediate School District (ISD) for the county where she went to school (for instance Calhoun Co ISD) - I have found elementry school records as far back as 1906 - her full name, address, and parent/guardian should be listed. Where did she go to high school - many schools have yearbooks (I found my Mom's from 1930 in Mt. Pleasant) Good luck and you're welcome.
