Since all deaths are suppose to be reported to the state you can always go to Lansing to the Library of Michigan and look at death records on microfilm and then if you find a death record that might be the person you are looking for you can then go to the State of Michigan and request the death record look up. Also if you have an idea when the deat occurred and in what county the usual fee for the search is four dollars or at least that is what Wayne County charges for searches. If you can't get to Lansing you can call the Library of Michigan as they do have people who will do look ups for a small fee. The larger Cities in Michigan do not return checks when they do not find the person you are looking for. Once when I went to the Vital Statistics in Lansing before I came out of there I had spent quite a bit of money for nothing. So I was back to square one. I finally started doing the county searches first in person. The county clerks seem to have more time to do look ups as opposed to the State of Michigan because they do not like doing the footwork. I did have better luck with the Counties but that only works if you know what county they were living when they died. I was looking for my great grandmothers death record and when I wnet to the County she was born in they allowed me to look up the record myself but it seems someone else was looking for it and had sticky fingers. So I had to go to Lansing and obtain a copy. The only reason I was able to get it was that I had the death record number. When I had been at the State the week before they couldn't seem to find the record. But they sure did keep my money! When I related what had happened the prior week they gave me the copy without recharging me. I'm trying to gather information on my Quinlan/Williams ancestors. My grandmother, Florence Monica Williams was supposedly born May 4, 1911. She used the middle name of Elizabeth because she didn't like Monica. My dad passed away in October and had a box of my grandmother's papers at his home. She had written that she was born in Detroit, MI at Dr. Taylor's house. (I would like to find her birth certificate.) She wrote that her father was Francis J. Williams from Wales and that he had left her mother before she was born. Her mother was Katherine Julian Quinlan, born about 1881 in Michigan. My grandmother mentioned something about her parents being married in Niles, Michigan. (I would like to find her birth certificate and a marriage license.) Katherine's parents were Patrick Quinlan (born Ireland per census) & Susan Meehan (born Montreal, Canada). They had several children besides Katherine - Joseph, Mary Ann, Rachel Bridget & Ellen. I did find Katherine Quinlan in the 1910 census in Part of Vicksburg Village, Brady Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan with a 7 year old son named Anthony J. (I'm wondering if Francis J. Williams is also Anthony's father.) I found her in the 1920 census as Kathryn Williams living with her children (Anthony & Florence) & her mother Susan Quinlan still in Brady Township. On both censuses she claims she is a widow but my grandmother mentions this in her paper that her mother did that because she was embarrassed her husband had left her. I found her in the 1930 Dallas Township, Clinton County, Michigan census married to a man named Jaspar Wagar. I have no record of her death. I could not find my Quinlans on any of the census prior to 1910. If anyone has any information I would love to hear it and also any suggestions as to how I might locate the birth certificates and marriage license. Thank you! Terri

Thanks Kevin, I just today received the death record of the ANNA MARIE MUELLER that we thought my GGrandfather married. No where was the name MUELLER. We are puzzled. It said her full name was MARIE ANNA KALTEICH, but that is really her married surname. It said her father was PHILIP PULTE from Germany living in St.Louis, MO. The MUELLER is now a mystery. We did find marriage records for OTTO KALTEICH and ANNA MARIE MUELLER. So, who then is MARIE ANNA ? I haven't ruled out MUELLER as the names were found living in the same neighborhood in Chicago, Ill. on the 1900 census. I love Laguna Hills. I was born in California, grew up in Anaheim. The beach cities are my old stomping grounds. That was back in the 50's. I had a school watercolor painting in the Laguna Beach Art Festival in 1956 I think? I was the city Tether Ball Champion in 1954, at Horace Mann Elementary. Those were the days! Now, no one knows what tetherball is. Needless to say, I was a tom boy. Thanks for the memories. Jodi, The best advice ANYONE can give you is to start with yourself and work backwards. Try to assemble a history of your life, then your mom and dad's, then your grandparents, then your greatgrandparents and give you something very easy and concise to look back at. It will save you a lot of trouble down the road! Next, talk to your family. Your family may know things, and if you start to talk about them, you may job memories (or better, gain a "you know who would know about that is...") Now, on to your query. Rootsweb is a great place to start! Athens and Kalamazoo are great hints - they're both in Calhoun County, Michigan. So start with what resources and information you can get off of the Calhoun County GenWeb, http://www.rootsweb.com/~micalhou/index.htm<http://www.rootsweb.com/~micalho u/index.htm>. I will warn you, however, that genealogy is typically recorded with the man's information since they were head of the household. So here are a few questions you'll probably need: 1. What's your great grandmother's married name vs maiden name? She'd be recorded under her father's household before she married *unless she had special circumstances*, and after she married, she'd be recorded under her married name. 2. When was she born and when did she die? Calhoun County has great cemetery resources, and you may find more of the family that way. When she was born will give you hints as to whether to search the 1850 or the 1880 census to find her. 3. Does her obituary give you any clues, like a parents name, a brothers name, etc? Those can help you place a missing female. Post what you know! Post everything but information about living individuals. The more you post, the more chance that someone will recognize a name. Calhoun County has two mailing lists, one for Rootsweb and one for its Genealogy Society. MICALHOU-L@Rootsweb.com<mailto:MICALHOU-L@Rootsweb.com> and CALHOUNCOUNTYGS@yahoogroups.com<mailto:CALHOUNCOUNTYGS@yahoogroups.com> The subscription information is near the bottom of the Calhoun County GenWeb site. Janet, I found John and Lillian in Holly, Oakland County, Michigan in 1920 (Census). What you need is her maiden name. Do you have her death certificate? Hopefully it would provide that information. Also, if available, take a look at any vital record certificates of her offspring. Any of those should have her maiden name as well. It's also probable that her marriage took place about 1895 or so. You might consider looking for marriage info in Oakland County. Do you know where John MILMINE is buried? You could write to the cemetery for information on him and inquire if she is buried there as well. This might tell you more about her family members and vital information. If you know who handled the funeral arrangements, you could inquire if they handled hers, too. If you know she was in Saginaw, MI about 1945, try for an obituary. Sounds like you might have already. Sometimes the social column of the local newspaper will say things like, "Mrs SOANDSO visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. UNKNOWN, for dinner in Lansing, Michigan last Sunday." This does take a lot of digging, but not impossible. Maybe if you don't live locally, you could view newspaper microfilm through your interlibrary loan. Just a thought. Hope these ideas help. When you find out, post your info. We are all curious for your success. Her maiden name was Outman (sp?) and she was married twice. Her first married name was Curtis. Her second was Wellington. (that's my grandpa's father.) Jodi, The best advice ANYONE can give you is to start with yourself and work backwards. So start with what resources and information you can get off of the Calhoun County GenWeb, http://www.rootsweb.com/~micalhou/index.htm<http://www.rootsweb.com/~micalhou/index.htm>.
