    2. This is the web link for the Latter Day Saints site. http://www.familysearch.org/ Click at library at the top of the page and you can locate a Family History Center near you. You can also search the archives online for all the records that are available. Films can be sent to any Center for a fee of $4.00 unless that amount has changed recently. Once sent to the center, films are available for 6 weeks to view and make copies. The Volunteers are wonderful and very helpful. The Centers has fiche viewers and computers so you can do additional searching right there at the Center. There are many Centers across the Nation and they are usually attached to a Mormon Church. I found one less than a mile from my home. Good luck with your search. Kathleen in Northern CA

Mary -----Original Message----- From: Doug Caldwell [mailto:dougsgenealogy@yahoo.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 18, 2005 6:20 PM To: MI-GENEALOGY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MI-Genealogy] 1872 burial location & newspaper death article This question has to do with Mecosta County genealogy and a possible death newspaper article of 1872 in Mecosta or Big Rapids or Hillsdale County or Missaukee County or Lake City or Cadillac or Grand Rapids. My great great grandfather John Caldwell from Ireland died in Big Rapids on 24 December 1872. At the time he lived in Litchfield, Hillsdale County. At the time his 2 eldest sons (Thomas & John Jr) had homesteads in Missaukee County. Otherwise there is no connection of my Caldwell family to Big Rapids or the Mecosta County area. I am trying to figure why my great great grandfather was in Big Rapids at the time; other than perhaps going back to Hillsdale County after visiting his sons in the Lake City area of Missaukee County. I would guess that lake City did not have a hospital for the sick. Was Big Rapids bigger than Cadillac at this time? Would it have had better medical facilities (e.g. a hospital)? Can NOT find where John Caldwell is buried. Apparently John Caldwell is buried in Big Rapids; that I have not been able to find so far...... It could be ......... I just can not find proof..... The Michigan death index GENDIS does shows his death record. What cemetery would be a logical choice? Is it on-line? Would someone be able to look up in the logical cemetery to find John Caldwell if he is in fact buried in Big Rapids? Would there be an obituary on John Caldwell in the Big Rapids local newspaper of the time of 1872? What hospital was going at this time? Would there be archived doctor's records? Would there be a newspaper article about "a stranger died in Big Rapids" in some paper just after December 24th, 1872 ?? All my other Caldwell relatives are buried in the Caldwell cemetery in Missaukee County (Arlene); EXCEPT for my great great grandfather John Caldwell (Sr). Need help in finding where he is buried (Michigan someplace unknown; maybe in Big Rapids; maybe near here). He lived in Jonesville/Litchfield in Hillsdale County at the time, however he is NOT buried anywhere in the Hillsdale County. His wife Jane (Thompson) Caldwell however is in the Sand Creek cemetery in Hillsdale County. The family lived in the Jonesville / Litchfield area; Hillsdale County. Thanks for any help or ideas.... Jodi, The best advice ANYONE can give you is to start with yourself and work backwards. Try to assemble a history of your life, then your mom and dad's, then your grandparents, then your greatgrandparents and give you something very easy and concise to look back at. It will save you a lot of trouble down the road! Next, talk to your family. Your family may know things, and if you start to talk about them, you may job memories (or better, gain a "you know who would know about that is...") Now, on to your query. Rootsweb is a great place to start! Athens and Kalamazoo are great hints - they're both in Calhoun County, Michigan. So start with what resources and information you can get off of the Calhoun County GenWeb, http://www.rootsweb.com/~micalhou/index.htm. I will warn you, however, that genealogy is typically recorded with the man's information since they were head of the household. So here are a few questions you'll probably need: 1. What's your great grandmother's married name vs maiden name? She'd be recorded under her father's household before she married *unless she had special circumstances*, and after she married, she'd be recorded under her married name. 2. When was she born and when did she die? Calhoun County has great cemetery resources, and you may find more of the family that way. When she was born will give you hints as to whether to search the 1850 or the 1880 census to find her. 3. Does her obituary give you any clues, like a parents name, a brothers name, etc? Those can help you place a missing female. Post what you know! Post everything but information about living individuals. The more you post, the more chance that someone will recognize a name. Calhoun County has two mailing lists, one for Rootsweb and one for its Genealogy Society. MICALHOU-L@Rootsweb.com and CALHOUNCOUNTYGS@yahoogroups.com . The subscription information is near the bottom of the Calhoun County GenWeb site. Hopefully that's some useful help!
