    3. And now, after this message with incorrect spelling, incorrect punctuation, incorrect capitalization, and incorrect grammar, I will unsubscribe. Bye. -----Original Message----- From: JeanPayton [mailto:jeanpayton@earthlink.net] Sent: Tuesday, April 12, 2005 6:12 PM To: MI-GENEALOGY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MI-Genealogy] Proper use of subject line and private e-mails. Well I think that this was just a little bit too harsh. Ye, there is netiquette to be followed and very few of any of us follow it. Yes, it is rude to keep the same subject title, but when there is someone new it should be up to every one to help out the newbie. Did you have someone teach you netiquette before you got on the list? Not eveyone has this opportunity to pay someone to teach them how to use the internet and these lists. Although I will say that the first list a person who is new should signup on the GEN-NEWBIE-L@rootsweb.com. This is a list for newcomers. But what is wrong about being kind and considerate of our new comers? As to asking questions, they should all be asked on list and answered on list as there is problably more than one person wanting the answer to the question. That is the most important way to learn how to research and learn techniques and the how and the whys of genealogy. To ask your questions off list is not benefitting anyone. Yes it is correct netiquette to change the line of Subject when you are talking about someone or something else, but hey wait a minute, we are all human beings on this list and we all deserve to be treated with respect and kindness. We are not as perfect as we seem to think we are. We all make mistakes in judgement and don't do what everyone else thinks we should be doing. I am glad that I don't consider myself the perfect person who knows all about netiquette and how everything should be done. When Joyce wrote in all capital letters, she tried explaining why she was doing what she was doing. She didn't know about the capital letters being considered shouting. It would have been much nicer for someone to write her off list and tell what the netiquette was concerning capital letters and try to help her enlarge her fonts instead of every one yelling at her. Everyone was too quick to jump on her and not offer any type of help. So listers, we all need to be considerate of each other and give respect to each other and try and be more accepting of people who are new to the list. You should be the first person to speak up and help a newbie. That will make this list run much better and there will be less mistakes made and on going hype over it. I have been on these lists for a good many years and it makes me feel good to be able to help someone who is new to computers and to genealogy. After all it took a while for you and for me to learn all of the ins and outs of Computers and Genealogy and how to put both to good use on these lists. So if anyone has a question that needs answering, I most certainly read all emails irregardless of the subject matter and I try to help the newbie and even the experienced oldies just give me a shout and I will do my best to help you. That is what these lists are all about. Not just names and dates. Helping each other!!! 2. With all due respect to the administrator(s) of this list, I personally felt that Dan made valid points and was not harsh at all. In fact, I thought he was remarkably polite considering the circumstances. I empathise with the lady who had undergone surgery and wasn't up to par with "netiquette." And I don't have a problem with her use of caps. All I take exception to are the repeated emails about this totally off-topic subject, nine of which I received in my in-box today alone. I would hope that everyone has sufficiently made their respective points, and we can get back to exchanging genealogical information pertaining to the state of Michigan. Thank you very much, and Dan - thank you for voicing what many others of us were afraid to submit to the list. Kelli Mallard

    2. Trisha Neal
    3. Looking for information on this family. Charlotte and Julia were sisters. Maiden name: RISLEY/RISLAY and first in US Census in 1850, Black Rock, Erie, NY. We think that Julia may have first moved to Michigan to be close to her sister who died (we don't know when she died) and then for some reason moved on to Corunna. Also trying to place Anna E. Durkee (DOB 1869 in New York) with Julia Durkee in Michigan. Julia in Michigan between 1892 and 1896 (shows up in City Directory for Corunna in 1896). THOMPSON, JOHN N (1870 U.S. Census) MICHIGAN , CLINTON, OVID TWP Age: 50, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: CANA Farmer Spouse: Charlotte age 50 @ Canada Children: Roger C, age 19 @ Canada; Charles age 14 @ Canada; Frank B age 9 @Michigan; Dora age 5 @Michigan DURKEE, JULIA M (1900 U.S. Census) MICHIGAN SHIAWASSEE, 1-WD CORUNNA Age: 71, Female, Race: WHITE, Born: CANA Looking for more information about this family. 3. HELLO JOYCE, AND GREETINGS FROM JOHN IN FL. GO FOR IT! NOTHING WRONG WITH ALL CAPS. NO QUESTION ABOUT IT, IT IS EASIER TO READ. FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN RECENTLY THIS IS NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT YOU GET FROM COLLEGE KIDS, AT LEAST THEIR ONLINE MESSAGES, NO CAPS AT THE BEGINNING OF SENTENCES, NO PUNCTUATION, SENTENCES RUN TOGETHER, MANY ABBREVIATIONS OF THEIR OWN INVENTION, ETC. MY OLD PROFESSORS WOULD BE TURNING FLIP FLOPS IN THEIR GRAVES. SOME OF SEASONED CITIZENS WILL REMEMBER WHEN AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF WHAT BECAME THE ELECTRONIC AGE WHEN TELEGRAPH MESSAGES WERE SENT OVER LONG DISTANCES THEY WERE ALWAYS IN CAPS! SO YOU MIGHT SAY THERE IS EARLY PRECEDENCE FOR IT. HAVE A BETTER DAY TOMORROW.
