    1. [MI-GENEALOGY] Marquette County Swedish church history
    2. Patricia Hamp
    3. Messiah Lutheran Church Golden Jubilee 1881-1931 Official title: GOLDEN JUBILEE ALBUM COMMEMORATING FIFTY YEARS OF SERVICE IN THE WORK OF THE LORD BY THE MESSIAH LUTHERAN CHURCH MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN V 1881-1931 32-35 Swedish immigrants started a church in the rough and tumble mining town of Marquette, Michigan's upper peninsula in May of 1881. They were surrounded by a new land which was bustling and growing as the area was rich in various ores being mined and Marquette became a port to load the large ships for their journey from Lake Superior to ports on the southern part of the Great Lakes to be processed for use. The parishioner's perseverance in bringing their religion and building a place for themselves in the area is laid out in this book in detail and includes the members names who helped along with the minister' names and short biographies of the latter. Compared to other books of this type it does an excellent job of naming founding members, current members, and has a large collection of committee photographs that have the people named. A great addition to any family history. The story of their trials in building their church and establishing their religion gives the reader an excellent view of the time period. It also covers the Great Flu Epidemic and how the quarantines were established and how it effected their Christmas celebrations and other church gatherings, including Sunday services. I hope those who have ancestors in this area find this book as useful as I think they may. Or there may be a connection. That's what I am trying to find out…and you may know. Do you know of a James Mitchell, b. 16 Oct 1920 in Herman Keifer Hosp, Flint, Genesee Co, MI. In 1922 his family, which I have been told was very large, moved to Detroit, Wayne Co, MI…where his father died in 1929 of Cancer. I find no record of this large family in Detroit in the 1930 census…which seems strange to me. James, I am told, married a girl from Boston, MA about 1950 and "had a couple of kids." James had about 12 siblings. James may have d. in Dec 1967. Also, a Harry Augustus Mitchell, b. 13 May 1884 in Reeder Twp, Missaukee Co, MI married my aunt, Margaret Maude Long in circa 1900/02. He d. Nov 1970 in Brooklyn, Jackson Co, MI. I've been told they "lived most there lives" in the Flint area. I am supposed to have a lot of 1st cousins. Would like to find out who they are before I become an ancestor. Do either of these ancestors fall within your realm of genealogy? ***************************** The theme of this list is Michigan genealogy and research.
