The Mid-Michigan Genealogical Society will feature LeRoy Barnett, former archivist at the State Archives November 28, will speak on his recent genealogical-related research plus the topic of "Librarians as Destroyers of Printed Materials." Meetings are held at Plymouth Congregational Church 2001 East Grand River Ave., Lansing, MI. 7pm-9pm. All are welcome. Don't forget the dinner before meeting at the Old Country Buffet in Okemos at 5:15, or you can brown bag it at the church at 5:30. There are no meetings in December or January. February meeting will feature Ray Walsh, owner of the Curious Book Shop and the Archives Book Shop. He will be talking on those old books in your reference collection - their value, how to take care of them and how to acquire more. An interesting article on eugenics especially as to how it related to the French-Canadian & Indian population in Vermont is written up in the Nov/Dec 2007 issue of ANCESTRY, titled "Dark Days", p. 42. If you don't have a bookstore/newsstand nearby that carry the magazine you can now subscribe to an online edition at www.ancestrymagazine.com. PRACTICAL FAMILY HISTORY magazine is a British publication; interesting articles in the October 2007 issue include researching your Herefordshire ancestors, dating old photos, Heraldic visitations and even one on Canadian Research. The British issue of FAMILY TREE MAGAZINE, Nov. 2007 has articles on WWI forebears, websites on North-West ancestors as well as information on websites, books, etc. The American issue of FAMILY TREE MAGAZINE, Jan. 2008 issue has an article on finding female ancestors and tracing Caribbean Roots, as well as websites, etc. The Nov./Dec. 2007 issue of EVERTON'S GENEALOGICAL HELPER has articles on Canadian and Scandinavian research as well as foreign map and gazetteer internet sites and different genie events throughout the country. sent on behalf of James P. I am looking for information on my anchestor Marinus Jacobus van der Wiere, he was born in 1800 in Middelburg (province of Zeeland) in The Netherlands. As widower and father of 9 he moved in 1873 to the States (yes he was 73 yrs young at that time). Two of his sons had already emigrated at that time, as well as one of his daughters. His daughter Martina stayed in The Netherlands and married Johannes Welvaars, the greatgrandfather of my grandfather. I would like to find out what happened to Marinus and his 3 kids in the USA. Where can I find out any info online (without paying a lot of money since these are the only anchestor to the States)? One of his sons went to Grand Rapids, there are still Vanderwiere people listed in Michigan. I think they all went there and stayed together, can someone lend me a hand? I am always prepared to lend a hand in the Netherlands for searching stuff here. Hi Carol, I have lots of Lemerand in my family file. Can you be more specific? My dad's first cousin, Art Lemerand lived across the street from me in Monroe County growing up. All either Monroe or Wayne county and from Quebec. -- Richard Van Wasshnova Seal Beach, CA ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, November 10, 2007 3:16 PM Subject: [MI-GENEALOGY] Lamirand information > Hello, I am looking for any information on the Lamirand, Lamirande, > Lemirand, Lemirande family.? Hello, Excuse my poor english. Esther: This is what I found for you. This is a list of sites that I use to locate my Dutch relatives (Blok, Timmerman, Joosen, etc.) in Michigan. Early transcribers had a hard time spelling Dutch names, I have found. Do use the look-up volunteer, Karen, for Kent County to search the City Directories ...and she will send you the information that is available. Her email address will be on the Kent Co. website (listed below). The city directories tell the address, occupations, and where people worked and with whom they lived, so there is lots of information that you can put together from that. I got some information that is in city directories from ancestry.com and filled it in with information from the look-up volunteers. I no longer belong to ancestry.com or I would look up some information for you. But you can request a look-up of the city directory information on ancestry.com from this site and some nice person will find it for you. Hopefully, you have placed your requested information on the Message Board for your surnames on ancestry.com. (It is free to post there) as well as genealogy.com's message board. Both are free. Lance, Unfortunately, I do not have any reliable knowledge as to where my Mitchell connection came from, originally. However, we believe that the bloodline has a Scottish-Irish flavor. We know they lived and worked in the Saginaw County and Bay County region, however, we think Harry had a gas station-auto repair business in Cadillac, Mi…in early 1900's. James' parents moved from Genesee County into "a great big house" in Detroit in 1922…where they had "a dozen or so kids." One son became an accomplished watch repairman. But other sons were mostly lathers. James' father did work as a brakeman for some railroad and died in 1929. So far, no one has been able to give me positive names of this group of Mitchell's…only guesses or nicknames. So, I won't go there.
Yes, those are the people I am talking about. I have info on Tillie Pryor, but nothing about Mary Stinger in Michigan. Anything you can find will help. I am looking specifically for the village where Mary was born. My brick wall. She was my grandfather's sister. Her father was Adam Becker who was killed with his wife in an accident in France in the 1860s. Until I find a village, I can go no further in my genealogy. Thank you so much. Anything you find will be helpful. I visited them in 1952. I believe the cousins are all dead. They were the same age as my father, since his sister was much older. Dolly Vanderwall was one of the children. Walter, Frances, etc. I did not know about Earnhardt, who was named for her uncle. Thanks again. There is a Mathilda Prior in Bay County, Michigan (very near to Reese which is the correct spelling of the city in your note) in the 1930 census, wife of John W., and daughters Celica and Francis. This Mathilda was born about 1877. Does that fit in with your information? I live in this area and could do some research if you think it would help in your quest. She is also in the 1920 census in Bay County, which shows her born in Iowa, with five children. The two there in 1930 along with three older others, Walter, Helen and Lansa. Also in 1910 with a son Eaharld (Harold?) and then Walter and Arlen (Helen?). Perhaps Eaharld did not survive to 1920. Also in 1900 with a son Charles, still in Bay County. Perhaps he didn't survive childhood either. I'm sure there are still Prior's in this area. If this is not the right family I could continue to search. Does anyone know anything about Mary Stinger (Ernhardt was dh), dob 1844 in Alsace Lorraine. She came to America and lived in Ohio and Iowa before settling in Michigan. I think the Saginaw/Bay City area. They had three sons. My aunt, Mathilda Becker moved from Iowa to Michigan to live with her aunt. She married a Pryor and lived in Reece. I would appreciate any information about any of these people. Thank you. Jean ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

Uretta, I would suggest that you go to the KVGS Kalamazoo Valley Genealogical Society website . Last year and also in the mid 1990s volunteers there did lookups for me. Last year I got curious about a 100 year old aunt telling me her first husband's name and that he had died back about 1930. It was pretty neat to learn more about her life before she married my uncle. In the mid-nineteen-ninetys working with the volunteer and with a wonderful person from Allegan the three way search between KVGS, Allegan and clues I found in an old ledger the three of us managed to find my 2nd great grandmother's burial place and her brief obituary in the Kalamazoo Gazette for 1885. Earlier I had called the county clerks office and no one with my gggrandmothers name had died on the date that was written in the old ledger. There was also no death recorded at the state level. Even stranger the only person the Kalamazoo county clerk had listed as dying that day was also listed in the cemetery records. The volunteer from Allegan used those records and when she went to the burial site the tombstone had my gggrandmothers real name birth and death dates plus her husbands name. To top it off all the burial sites in that plot held relatives. The volunteer also told me my ancestors were buried up on a hill , among beautiful full grown trees , overlooking the river. The information in the old ledger told exactly the same as the brief obituary. Our searches took two weeks of e-mailing information back and forth. Not bad for an event that took place in 1885.
