    1. Re: [MI-GENEALOGY] Michigan death certificates
    2. Nancy Keith
    3. Another option for those who have access to the Library of Michigan in Lansing is to pull out the microfilms of death records. These are filmed copies - not transcriptions, which could include many errors - of death records in the state of Michigan. These films of death records go from 1867 - 1920. >From the Library of Michigan website: http://www.michigan.gov/hal "The 1897-1920 Michigan Death Records, a brand-new resource that is available at the Library of Michigan, will benefit family history researchers across the state. "This records set supplements the Library's existing vital records collection, which also includes Michigan death records from 1867 to 1897, and fills a gap in Michigan genealogical research," said Randy Riley, Special Collections Manager at the Library of Michigan. "These statewide records were not previously available outside of the Michigan Department of Community Health, so this is a real boost for genealogists here, and for those who travel from other states to use the Library." (My friend and I make the four-hour trip there two-three times a year and stay for several days each time, as there is SOOOOOOOO much information at that library!) They also have all of the census films, lots of information from Ontario, Canada (the birthplace of many Michigan residents' ancestors), a whole, huge section of Michigan-only information and maps, and more than I can describe. Genealogy books by the thousands, computer access to New England Historical and Genealogical Society (NEHGS, a super-valuable source for New England ancestors) and other genealogical sites. Checking the online site will give you a better overview of their resources. I am not an employee there, just a *fan* who appreciates that we have access to all of these resources here in our own state. 2. Kris Rzepczynski
    3. Yes, if Leah (or Benjamin) died in Michigan, there should be a death record. The Michigan state death records at that time - 1891 - are not certificates, but written out in the large oversize ledger books. Parents' names are not typically found on the state death records until 1897/1898. There may be additional information on the county death record, housed at the county clerk's office in Kalamazoo; they're also available through the LDS network. Michigan death records from 1867-1920 are available at the Library of Michigan. I would still encourage you to get a copy of the death record, regardless if the parents' names are listed or not. Depending on when the family first settled in the Kalamazoo area, there are lots of other things to look at: plat books, county histories, obituaries, .... The Kalamazoo Public Library has an outstanding online index to the Kalamazoo Gazette, be sure to look at that. Good luck. 2. go to mich.gov and go to vital records. they will give you the phone number and other information for contacts. I asked for naturalization for my ggrandfather and they called and asked if I wanted to really pursue it as there was not much information gathered at the time he came over. I had death certificates for three individuals, so had death dates (all circa 1900-1920), and was looking for the cemetery records, i.e. who the contact people were, anything else recorded at time of burial. The cemetery folks replied by mail, saying that they effectively have no records, and that I already had much more information about the decedents than they did. This DID happen, but it was in regard to burials at Mt. Elliott (Catholic) Cemetery in Detroit, NOT Trinity Lutheran! I did write to Trinity Lutheran CEMETERY. They wrote in reply, saying that to provide burial record information, they required the death or burial date and $25.00 per individual record requested. 2. old news
    3. Cindy and all, It's easy to add a disaster (accident, drowning, train wreck, car wreck, explosion, tornado, fire etc...) Go to http://www.gendisasters.com (and, yes, it really should be working correctly now) Look toward the bottom of the left side bar - it'll read register or log in. Register - all you need is to create a user name and password and give your email address Then, click on "Add a Disaster Article" - it's in the same sidebar a little higher up the page. The form that opens will help walk you through adding the article. 3. Did you write the Trinity Lutheran Church? A friend of mine went to the church for me and found the names of my family listed there with dates of baptisms, marriages, deaths. I have searched every cemetery possible in that area and being my great great uncle Fredrich Loersch was one of 21 founders of the church I am pretty sure he is buried there. I know that you have to make an appointment with them to get in and see their records and I was hoping some one that lived in the area might be able to go that for me, I am willing to pay for the service. 3. originally from the Kincardine, Ont, Canada area....this is where Eli Ryness or Rhyndress married Mary Whalen ok..i have another address for the cemetery in detroit...I'm hoping to get to the Courthouse here in Pontiac, they have a genealogy room...and have several cemetery books...will check, but here is what another relative of mine gave here. The address of the cemetery is 5210 Mt. Elliott, Detroit. The church is at 1345 Gratiot, Michigan toll free is 800 268-3058 or 313 567-3100. They have a website for the church at www.historitrinity.org. There are a few burial records on the internment site. Just google trinity lutheran cemetery detroit. Will keep on it......Patiann the Pontiac library might have something too....got to call Terry, a friend there....
