    3. Tengate --- Regarding military records of you father - I too was told back in 1980 the my father's military (Army) was in the July 12, 1973 fire and probably burned as many were. This was a form letter with a checked box. I restarted my genealogy reseach in early 2006. Igot my father's records - it pays to try again. I urge you, and others to go to : http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html The screen that comes up is eVetRecs: Request Copies of Military Personnel Records. To use this system -- you must be military veteran, OR -- next of kin to a deceased, former member of military If not kin follow boxed directions where you'll need to fill out an extra form. Don't give up, save everything you fill out, make sure you have dates and copies. They finally found my father's records in Pennsylvania somewhere, sent the file to the VA office in Portland, OR and the contact I had there copied everything of importance and mailed it to me (I live in OR now, just north of Portland on the Columbia River). They didn't didn't charge me anything at that time. I don't know if there are any charges since. Good luck hope you to can find the military records you need. 3. My father, Frederick Charles LaLone, b. 3/26/1887 (county unknown) MI, d. 1/16/1971, Eureka, CA. When I was very young his mother traveled from MI to visit us in Rio Dell, CA, and I knew her as Hattie. Her last name (possibly maiden name) was Fitzpatrick. She had twin boys, Frederick and Edward. Edward had a son Tom who I know lived at 1318 Randolph, Traverse City, MI on 1/18/1949 with a wife Janie and daughter Patricia. I also know my father served in the Army (by a photograph); his service record was destroyed in a 1973 fire according to the National Personnel Records Center. I'm hoping for any information to identify my paternal Michigan heritage.

    1. [MI-GENEALOGY] Who is Harold Leonard Stevens?
    2. Jeannie Stevens
    3. In December 1905, a woman named Bertha Soles (spelling?) found a baby boy in a church she was cleaning in Lansing, Michigan. She took this boy home and as fate would have it, her husband and her adopted this little boy. Her husband died in approximately 1917 and she remarried. Harold, then took this man's last name even though he wasn't legally adopted by the second man. The state said back then that it was okay for Harold to do so as long as he didn't keep switching back and forth between Soles (spelling?) and Stevens. Does anyone out there know anyone who may have given a child up at birth? The only thing actually known is that he still had his umbillical cord attached when he was found and that the church was a Seventh Day Adventist church. Rumors have circulated among the family that he was adopted out of the orphanage or out of the church he was found in. Can anyone Help me find out who he was? Thank you. 3. I'd just like to publicly thank Jackie, a wonderful lady who lives somewhere Michigan, who has helped my ferret out John B's descendants and assorted family, right down to a living cousin, who still lives in Detroit, Michigan, who I was able to contact today. All this came from 'feeling' that John BE had gone to the US, which was proved, even if he started off by arriving in New York, and then going to Windsor, Essex, Ontario to start with, and then turning up in Detroit, Michigan in 1900. I am so grateful to this lady, and to all the wonderful people who respond to the various Roots sites. If I can ever try to help anyone looking for Australian info, please email me and I will do my very best. Regards Jan Moon Daintree, Australia

    3. Hello Jan, I am responding to your request for information from Michigan genealogy. There are a couple transcription errors that I noticed when I reviewed the 1900 census, John's birth year should probably be 1866. He was located in Detroit, but his age was transcribed as age 14. John was naturalized, so you can order his records. He immigrated in 1879 or 1880...different on two censuses. I found one family with John W. listed, the correct age and year of immigration from one census record. Also, in comparing the different census information, Mary is another person because the ages are different and where she was born in Ohio is different from wife #1. I will send the file from the 1900 census to you. It appears from the census that John married wife #1 between 1888 -1889. I located this marriage below in Madison, Ohio which may or may not be correct because of the first name, Clara..but she might have been called by her middle name. I did not see a marriage listed for John in the Michigan DiBean records, but I might have missed it. Goodson John W. Harbage Clara Feb 9 1888 http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/oh/madison/vitals/marriages/marriage15mb.txt May I suggest that you try using the free National Search engine for marriages in the surrounding states of Michigan as well as checking the Michigan records again. Search for Goodson in the states of Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, New York, and Ontario, Canada. On the Michigan Gen Web, you can can check the Dibean records for his marriage. Access to the records is found on the following URL. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/newsearch.htm Ontario, Canada Marriage Registrations. This is a good resource for Michigan people as many people came from Canada to Michigan as well as others going to Canada to marry. I believe you can search by year and/or name. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maryc/thisisit.htm 1900 > MICHIGAN > WAYNE > 1-WD DETROIT Series: T623 Roll: 747 Page: 129 Surname GivenName Age Sex Race Birthplace State County Location Year GOODSON JOHN W 14 M W ENGL MI WAYNE 1-WD DETROIT 1900 June 1st and 2nd 1900 Living on Milwaukee Avenue 151 7 7 Goodson, John W. 3. I am new to this list, having recently discovered that my gt grandfathers brother emigrated to the States in 1880. I am a member of Ancestry, but only UK (didn't know I would find some Americans, did I??) I am hoping that sks can help with a marriage for John W Goodson, perhaps in abt 1879. On the 1910 Census his wife is named as Fela M Goodson - and in the 1920 Census she is listed as Mary, but this may be two different wives, as the ages aren't right. I am also looking for the births of his daughters, Florence J (abt 1890) and Lyla G (abt 1892) Very grateful for any assistance. Regards Jan Moon Daintree, Australia

    3. Okee-Dokee, Mary.. Thank you so much.. and the response from the list has been overwhelming, but you were the first to reply.. I will continue to try to get in touch with someone at the church, but all I have been getting is voice messaging.. I'm sure I can talk to someone their with the info you are requesting, before Thursday or Friday. The name "Jim McConnell" sounds familiar to me, but if he worked for the MDE, I didn't know him personally. I was in special education office, first working for Rich Baldwin, and after he retired, I worked for the now current director, Jackie Thompson. I knew the Detroit Sp. Ed. Director, but right now I can only remember her first name... Ingrid ??? I was in your district on several different ocassions before I retired from MDE... How nice to talk again to someone from MI. PS.. send me your mailing address, as I really want to send you $20 bucks for helping me out... 3. Frank, let me know if you still need help in a couple of weeks. I'm near Phoenix, but am going to southern MI to visit family in February. I know where Southland Mall is as well as the cemetery across the street. I always visit Southland when I'm in town (especially the Kohl's next door). Let me know what the favor is and if no one in town gets to it first, I'll take care of it for you since my folks are very close. Monroe, MI is a good little drive from Taylor, MI (about a half hour or a little more). Besides, we're practically neighbors here in AZ. :-) Alice ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frank Rowell" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, January 12, 2008 11:53 AM Subject: [MI-GENEALOGY] West Mound Cemetery, Taylor MI > Hello All: > > I am looking for someone on the list who lives in or near Taylor, MI who > might be willing to run an 'errand' for me, at my cost of course.. > > Through http://www.findagrave.com/ I was able to locate whom I believe to > be my GG Grandfather, William A. 3. Thanks Beth. I'm sorry I didn't mention this before. That James isn't my James that I know of. Mine was born in Oct according to the 1900 census. Thats why it's been so tough, a popular name. I will send his wife's info in my next message. Thank you again for looking that up. Susan G PS I even have a picture of that tombstone if anyone is intrested in it.
