I don't know who started this web site but I want to Thank them for everything they have done for all us who have been working on our family tree's. You sure can learn a lot from them. Pat
Thank you Nancy.... I searched Muskegon Cty and spent two days going through about 6000 death certificates. I suggest going into NO NAME also as I found still born deaths for a few of my relatives. If I hadn't gone into them, there would be no way of knowing who the family was. Too bad they didn't put 'baby (father's last name)' at that time. When you open the HOME page, you can click on the SEEK tab, upper right. When you open that page, there are four fields for keying in what you're looking for, but you have 26 choices for each field. Among others, you can look for any surname, or everybody with the given name of your choice, or all the entries from one county or from a city, a village, or a township, or pick a death year or an age.... the combinations are nearly endless. I even spent some time going through all the records for my county, not inputting a name or anything else. It's fun! Just be aware to think outside the box when it comes to names. Between the transcriptions and the original clerk's ideas of names, there are some pretty creative spelling results. You certainly are welcome, and I hope they can help you. Actually, between Rootsweb and Yahoo, there are quite a few discussion lists out there. Their websites show not only what focused-interest groups are available but also what already has been posted, shown in their various archives. Very interesting browsing, there. oh here's some more good story....i started this genealogy in 65 or 66 and about that time, my grandfather was here for a visit from Wash...and gee wouldn't you think...he would have some simple answers about his father..but when i asked....his breath slammed me against the wall (matter of speaking)..he passed in 76 and in abt 82 is when i was told the story of the milk...that one sunday he went for a qt and didn't come back... then it was in 96 when my cousin and i was working together that we got the story i told you... sorry, i mispoke myself...i meant that 1920 is the last i have of Sarah...i can't find her on the 1930 census for Ogemaw or Oakland....and can't find a death report on her... would also like to know if they div here or in canada and just happened that both came over...this is what is strange...that both come...if div...with kids still there and kids over here... confusing bunch....you got that right.... thanks for the help so far....and if you find anything else..appreciate it... now don't know if i said....but i don't live in MI anymore...my youngest needed my help...and knew it would be better for my health...i have asthma and arthititis...so now i'm in AZ and i have a son that came with me... till later.... oh yea....if you ever make contact with Lorene Wilson in Flint, MI or Houghtaling in MI...they are related...on my grandmothers side....Best Patsy --- On Mon, 4/27/09, Laura Gould <ljgould@sbcglobal.net> wrote: From: Laura Gould <ljgould@sbcglobal.net> Subject: Re: [MI-GENEALOGY] looking for a death record To: mi-genealogy@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, April 27, 2009, 6:36 AM Well, THAT's a confusing bunch! The 1900 census for Ogemaw has John Rhyndress as head of household born January 1872 in Canada with his mother Sarah Foote widow born September 1843 in England and his brother Robert born September 1883 in Canada So apparently John Foote died before 1900. ok, that is something i didn't find...about her being a widow...i knew she was with her son John and Robert...thanks.. The 1910 census for Ogemaw has Sarah B.(?) Foot as head of household looks like it lists her with 3 marriages, married 6 years, has had 10 kids with 5 still living born England parents born England came to US in 1886. She is living next door do Robert and his wife and daughter Cleo. It doesn't list a husband and doesn't say she is widowed....hmmm. now is the B suppose to be for a middle name or her maiden name....ok...three marriages would be right marriages: Eli A. Rhyndress.....with three kids John Peck......with four girls...(two were twins) she married him when she heard that Eli was dead two yrs after he left..(one sunday aft to get a qt of milk) Eli A.......after he returned 8-10yrs later...and having married Mary Whelan..had three children...she died after the third...he left the kids and returned back to Sarah..and why or how..but John left...leaving her the 4 girls...so now there are 7 kids and now my grandfather Robert is born.1883..that's the 10 kids... it is in 1886 that it says they came to Michigan...but where or when did they divorce... cause in 1888 she married John Foot(e)..... i would say it was the older ones that stayed there married....George, Hannah, and three of the four Pike girls...cause Elizabeth Pike married David Best...my grandmothers uncle...she was Robert's half brother...and when Robert (my dad's father) married Martha Best....his half sister became his Aunt by marriage... so now this is where i said i can't find the divorce between Elia and Sarah...and he married Maria Chapel in Bay City after coming over from Canada....his death is in Bay City Hospital in 1907 The 1920 census for Sarah with Jacob Clark(?) says she and her parents were born in MI, I guess that could be misinformation. now i did see her with this Jacob...but what is her age there...cause her parents were born in England as was she....and there is a Sarah Foote...but I don't know if it is John's daugh of another marriage or a niece... Robert's marriage record to Martha Best for the same county gives parents names as Eli Rhyndress and Sarah Bachus. Maybe this alternate spelling would help. yes this is right...Sarah had an Uncle that came over from England arriving to learn that a backhouse here was the name for the outhouse or shithouse...and he was too high class for that.....so it was changed...backhouse in england is the back bakery.....Backhouse, Backhaus, Bachaus, Backus, Baccus, and maybe others....as with Rhyndress...started out Rheinjert. Riness, Rhiness, Rhindress, Rhness, Ryness, and others... Sarah's marriage record to John Foote says she was married only once previously and only lists her names as Rhyndress and Backus. Where/when did she marry John Peck? That was in Canada when Eli went away in 1872 , which also was right after the third child was born in Jan...not returning for 7-10yrs.first story i was told he went for a qt of milk one sunday aft...and didn't return right away and abt 1yrs. later Sarah learned he was dead...and then married the farm hand...John Peck...then in the late 1997 when doing genealogy with my cousin...we received this line with Mary Whelan. from a Richard Rhyndress...that is related somehow....because he knew it was our Eli...then later cousin was told in a way...well he went to look for work..(which is what many men did in that era), but my opinion was...well that didn't give him the right to marry a woman and have three kids, and because she died after childbirth...leave those three kids and return to the real wife with three kids and have another...and raise the extra four she had while he was gone... i mean girl......is this how the song was inheirited..."I'm my own Grandma" and i just noticed that they were div...about 1885...yet on the MI census, Sara and the kids came over abt 1886.... so i guess that Eli came too.... There is a listing at www.familysearch.org that shows a Sarah Backhouse born September 10, 1843 at Garton on the Wolds, Yorkshire, England with parents Richard Backhouse and Jane....that matches her birth month and year given in the 1900 census and she could have gotten her middle name from her mother. yes, this is her middle name...and Jane's maiden name was Bealby...and that is how my grandfather Robert got his middle name. Also at familysearch there is a record for Sarah Backhouse married to Eli Angeline Rhyndress son of Eli Angevine Rhyndress and Harriet Crittenden and it gives Eli Angevine's parents as James Rhyndress and Sarah Hunt. It gives their birth dates and places as well. Also at this site there is a Richard Backhouse born December 5, 1813 at Garton on the Wolds, Yorkshire, England with parents James Backhouse and Hannah. and i would say this is how she named her daugh.. Hannah....after her grandmother. now on top of this backhouse line...I believe it is brothers to Richard Backhouse...one went down the line that produced..the Hotel Astor.in New York...their sone John Jacob Astor (the one on the Titanic)(whose wife on the Titanic that was pg..was not his first wife..well i think they were married...he may just have gotten her pg..but was still married..) John's mother was a Jacob and her mother was a Backhouse.. then the other line went down to produce the Vandebilts...that built the Biltmore Estates in North Carolina You probably already have that Sarah's husband Eli remarried to Mary Briggs Laprine in Bay City in 1898. yea, i found this and i have also heard he married Maria Chapel...but i'm wondering if it is the same person... There is a Richard and Jane Baccus in the 1881 Canadian census for Bentinck, Grey South, Ontario. There is a Eli Rhyndress widowed of Irish descent age 40 on the 1881 Canadian census for Kincardine, Bruce South, Ontario. ok this would be widowed from Mary Whelan... George Rhyndress son of Eli and Sarah married Jennie Harrington in 1890 Ogemaw. Hannah J. Rhyndress daughter of Eli and Sarah unknown married Robert Ward in 1890 Ogemaw.oh thank you...i've been trying to remember how John Ward was related...that's right.... John Ryndress son of Eli and Sarah Bachaus married Mytle G. Tolang 1901 Ogemaw. The death record on www.usgenweb.com for Ogemaw County lists Sarah Jane Foote died September 5, 1937, parents Dudley Mixer and Mary Birchbill....?! this is the other sarah foote i was telling you about Laura -genealogy-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mi-genealogy-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of PATIANN Sent: Sunday, April 26, 2009 6:46 PM To: mi-genealogy-l@rootsweb.com Subject: [MI-GENEALOGY] looking for a death record I have found my grt grandmother on the 1920 census, but i can not find her anywhere else.... Heritage Quest DOES have the 1850 census - it is just not indexed. When you pull up Heritage Quest and the census list, hit the Browse button at the top of the page. Then you input the state, county, and it will also want a township - pick the last one you know of where the person was. Then you scroll through the pages as if you were using a microfilm reader at the library. Good luck. Heritage Quest has all census' but many are not indexed so if you know township or city level not too hard to browse. -- Richard Van Wasshnova http://www.gencircles.com/users/vanwasshnova http://gw.geneanet.org/vanwasshnova On Sun, Apr 26, 2009 at 6:52 PM, <Marennad@aol.com> wrote: > Hertiage Quest does not have 1850 census and for some reason I am not > pulling it up on Ancestry???? > > Looking for Calvin Donaldson born I think in New Jersey in 1785. Hertiage Quest does not have 1850 census and for some reason I am not pulling it up on Ancestry???? Looking for Calvin Donaldson born I think in New Jersey in 1785. Died in Barry County in 1854. So I was hoping to locate him in the 1850. His wife was Eleanor 1792 - 1854. They had a son named Francis - listed as Clergy. He died in Ireland in 1857 but he is in Steubenville NY in 1850. Here are some things I found...sorry if I ramble. The 1900 census for Ogemaw has John Rhyndress as head of household born January 1872 in Canada with his mother Sarah Foote widow born September 1843 in England and his brother Robert born September 1883 in Canada So apparently John Foote died before 1900. The 1920 census for Sarah with Jacob Clark(?) says she and her parents were born in MI, I guess that could be misinformation. Robert's marriage record to Martha Best for the same county gives parents names as Eli Rhyndress and Sarah Bachus. Maybe this alternate spelling would help. Hello - Charles Wing, born 1848 (although in the censuses this varies!), was married to Harriet/Hattie Powell; they lived in Rochester, Oakland County, Michigan from the 1880 Federal census through 1920. In 1880 Charles and Harriet had four children - Winnie, Bertie, Samuel and Arvilla. In 1900 Charles and wife Mary had four children - Bert, Ica, Joseph and Fay. In 1910 Charles was a widower (Harriet Mary Powell died in 1905) and had in his household Par, Edith and Homer. Samuel and Bert lived nearby. In 1920 Charles is in Parthenius Wing's household in Royal Oak, Oakland County, Michigan. Homer Wing was a member of the "Polar Bears" and died in Russia. The American Legion Post in Rochester, Michigan is named for him. I would like to know if there is any way of determining the parentage of this Charles Wing. Is there somewhere I can look online for a record of his death? Is there a record at the Mount Avon Cemetery, where Hattie is buried, of Charles' death and/or burial? I am also wondering if there would be an obituary for him somewhere? He should be the son of Samuel and Margaret Wing, but it would be great to be able to have a record of this! Thank you for any help you may be able to provide - Barbara
