A freeman was a person who was not indentured into servitude. They were respectable members of the community regardless of which church they belong to. One had to own land in order to be a freeman. One should bare in mind that only landed, white males were allowed to vote in the early years of our national identity. Here in Vermont we still have to take the freeman's oath in order to register to vote. If you decline to take the oath you will not be added to the voter registration. I do not believe that it is constitutional to deny voter rights based on this but since it is a historical requirement it has never been changed or challenged. Lee
