    3. Hi Folks, I just did a search on Google and came up with a year of 1816, in which snow and ice occurred over most of the country, during the summer months. The conclusion is, that this was caused by a volcano in the south Pacific. Probably this is the origin of the phrase, "eighteen hundred and froze to death." There were probably other weather aberrations that caused colder than normal conditions, in the past, but this I think, was the most devastating. It caused widespread crop failures, with the accompanying lack of food. Some folks had it pretty desperate.
