    1. [MEYORK] Erroneous Information in Works by a Popular Author of Note
    2. Eugene Hubbard
    3. I have personally found Frederick Lewis Weis' 7th edition work (see mention below) to have errors of the magnitude stated by Boyer. Not only does Weis propagate errors in that work, he created conflicting information in his 1962 work co-authored by Mrs. Minney Swezy Elmendorf titled "The Ancestry of Governor Thomas Dudley". In this book, not only do dates differ from front to back, but lineage as well. I found corroborating evidence of Weis' inexactitude in the intro to the following book: "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans" by Carl Boyer 3rd. personally published in Santa Clarita, CA 2001. Introduction, page vi, quoted in part: ...."Publishing any material on medieval genealogy is fraught with peril. Many of those who have traced their own lines back far enough to become interested in Medieval genealogy are among the most experienced and scholarly of genealogists (although, on the other hand, quite a few others have simply followed the trash on the web back dozens of generations), and are not likely to have infinite patience with any effort to go into print by someone who might include some errors. Yet the errors are simply unavoidable. The highly popular [start italics] Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonists [end italics], now in its seventh edition, which followed forty-two years later, is the product of much research and debate on the part of many scholars. Yet it is riddled with errors and typos which become obvious when anyone checks through the various lines for all mentions of one person." .... My observation: As a result, it will not do to just check the information in Royalty.Ged against Weis, but when a conflict is found, one should refer to at least a third source in an attempt to resolve the difference. (This of course would apply in any case, regardless of the sources you are using.) 'Gene Hubbard

    3. Yes, I did. The real problem is, I didn't see a marriage of a Peter Pray to a Libb(e)y of any name in the Libby books. So, I could concievably have ancestral data on her but it just doesn't show up as the Libby books don't show this marriage and, therefore, I have no way to link her to what I do have. Allen E. 3. I spent most of last night trying to find out more about this. I went through every mention of the PRAY Surname and Sarah Libbey in all of my Libby books and collected data. I went through the VR's of Berwick and York County. All I found was the Marriage Intentions, Cert, and Marriage place and person who married them. 3. Some of the Libbeys ended up/started out/went back and forth in the Shapleigh/Acton area OR they might have been Baptists like my Shoreys, so records are difficult to locate. Since Stackpole listed the children without birthdates, there are probably no available records in Berwick. I suggest that you check Strafford County, NH. I only have a few Libbeys in my database, but the name is one that catches my notice when I'm researching, if you know what I mean. At 10:25 AM 3/1/2003 -0500, Allen E. Humphries wrote: >Yes, I did. 3. Christine, I saw your recent posting about the Grant family in Berwick, Maine. I've been trying to locate the Pray family of Berwick, Maine for years now. I am trying to find the names of the children born to Peter Pray and Sarah Libbey. According to Anne Pray Becker's death certificate 26 Jan 1886 (info. found in the New Castle NH town office) they were her parents. I can find a marriage between Peter & Sarah for 23 Jan 1777 at the 2nd church, Berwick Maine but have not been able to find a birth or baptism record for any children. I also can't find when or where they died. Since you seemed to find so many birth/baptism records for your Grants, I was wondering if you could direct me as to where to look for the Pray family birth records. I've looked at the Historical Library in Portland and the State Library in Augusta, Maine with no success. Anne supposedly was born 15 Sep 1797 according to the Bible records written down by her son Henry Becker Jr. I have that Bible by the way. Any hints you could give would be greatly appreciated. Can a plaintiff request an execution? Perhaps it's a request for an execution of a judgment. The records will tell when I find them. Regarding Cyndi's list, and given my subject, would you be so kind to recommend the search criteria you might use? My searches have been unsuccessful, and I'm sure it's my keywords. Any hints about that site, or assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to the list, just yesterday as a matter of fact, and am curious about the posting about the buried people of York, and the return of the captives. Are archives available, or should I read up on this somewhere? What happenned back then? Thanks so much, Linda

    3. I commend "NPM" for a model reply, which recognizes the importance or accuracy, evidence, and understanding by each of us - very kindly and diplomatically explained - with education, by a fine explanation. We agree that PLT stands for plaintiff and on the definition of Execution. Since the correction applies to the last six lines, below, I've re-named this portion of the exchange "evidence -> judgment -> execution ...", as it's separate from the principal msg., praise for www.cindyslist.com. Yes, thanks. You're completely right, particularly in challenging for a "preponderance of evidence", which marks you, NPM, a real pro.! The last six lines of this message repeat a cryptic abbreviation from a prior message on another thread, followed by my facetious note which, if shared at all, would have better been in different topic. 3. Are you convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that the index entry you are referring to is a CRIMINAL case? Where is the preponderance of evidence to show that this index entry is a criminal case instead of a civil case? In a civil case the JUDGMENT would be executed. Children, <snip> http://www.rootsweb.com/~megardin/clay.gif I'd be glad to know of on-line resources, or where I should write for records from this time. Also, would anyone be able to tell me how to order York County court records? I have more, and some from Kennebec, too.
