Hi Carol, Daughters of Pocahontas was a woman's affiliate organization of the Improved Order of Redmen. There is a Masonic museum site that gives some information on the IORM and its origins. It seems to have evolved from the Boston Tea Party "Indians". http://www.phoenixmasonry.org/masonicmuseum/fraternalism/red_men.htm The Rebekahs are part of Odd Fellows. http://www.ioof.org/IOOF/Rebekahs.html Margaret --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by friend.ly.net.]
I have received a copy of an obituary, the whole left side of which is missing so I've had to piece it together. It was for a Kennebunkport resident. As in my last request, my question is to do with organizations to which she belonged. Hopefully someone can fill in the missing information and tell me a little about the organizations. Following is what I have. I've put in brackets what I think the missing words were. "She was a graduate of Kennebunkport High school, [?] of Aurora Chapter, O. E. [?} . . . [?]el Grange. Looks confusing, doesn't it? Sorry about that. I'd appreciate any help someone might be able to give me. If anyone goes to the Kennebunk library regularly and would be willing to look at the microfilm for this particular obituary to see if more of it can be seen than on the copy printed from it, I'd appreciate hearing from you. I have just received an obituary for a relative who lived in Kennebunk. It says she was a member of "the Rebekahs and the Daughters of Pocahontas." Can anyone tell me anything about those organizations? Thank you. Carol Dobson New Englander living in Indiana
Hello, "Cyndi's List" has a good page with links to most of the fraternal organiztions. That page is at: http://www.cyndislist.com/soc-frat.htm Here's where to find out all you want to know about the Rebekah's: http://www.ioof.org/IOOF/Rebekahs.html . They are the female branch of the "Odd Fellows". "The Daughters of Pocahontas" are the women's affiliate of "The Improved Order of Redmen". Go to the Redmen's site at: http://www.redmen.org/ . On the lefthand sidebar, you will see "Pocahontas". Directly below that there is a place to click on for the information that you want. Allen E. I apologize. My web site is down, probably until Monday. You will not be able to get passed the home page. Anyone needing a lookup in the 1905 censuses, let me know and I will try to check it out for you from here. http://www.knights.hls-inc.net/ Darlene

Dear List: I found a duplicate marriage in the subject file. While it appears harmless on the surface, it could wreak havoc in producing a report. It concerns Henry II of Brabant and Adelaide of Orlamunda. 'Gene Hubbard

Can someone tell me anything about the "LOOM FIXERS HALL" at Alfred street BIDDEFORD. Thank you. ERMIR BOLZANO -ITALY
I wrote to my cousin Dave Haines, DnJHAINES@aol.com, to see if he had any information on this. He has a book on old mills coming out soon and I thought this might be right up his alley. This is his response. Since I know nothing about this please contact him for more info. Priscilla On the Net... Under Loom Fixers Hall, Biddeford, Maine.... Nothing Under Loom Fixers Hall, about 20 hits, but nothing about Maine. Under, Loom Fixers, Maine, there are several but none in Biddeford. Under Alfred St., Biddeford, Maine, there's a whole bunch of stuff with names and addresses. And... the Biddeford Police are at # 39. Phone # listed but no e-mail #. The inquiry is a little shy of details. If I had a better idea what he was looking for, I might have an old mill contact in Maine. Loom is a textile mill thing. Assuming it's Biddeford, Maine, perhaps 'he' should inquire of the Biddeford-Saco Chamber of Commerce, or the local paper. My guess is that is a thing of the 1900-1930 era. Most of those old organizations have long since disappeared but the buildings may still be intact. Sorry, can't be of more help...
