Hi John; I would like a picture, if you will let me put it on my web site. I have a "Save Hatch Cemetery" website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~edgecomb/index3.html Thanks, Dana Edgecomb At 08:42 PM 4/13/03 -0400, GordonsOfMaine@aol.com wrote: > If anyone would like a photo of the cemetery taken from the new Maguire > Road >bridge let me know, and I'll take one next weekend. >John Wesley Gordon
I grew up in a small house on High Street in Kennebunk just a few hundred yards from the Hatch cemetery. A grass covered tote road ran from the back of our garden out to the small cemetery, and I remember well having people park in our drive to walk out and pay their respects and tend the stones. I think some of the Hatches were still in town in the sixties. We drove past on the turnpike this afternoon. It is very sad to see the cemetery in the middle of so much construction -- the new road will be just inches away. They've taken down the old trees, and the cemetery's iron fence is surrounded by plastic orange fencing, a small island in a sea of mud. A very sad sight. If anyone would like a photo of the cemetery taken from the new Maguire Road bridge let me know, and I'll take one next weekend. I'm searching for any information about my ancestor Edmund WELCH from the York Co. Maine area. I received copies of three deeds for him recently. Does anyone know what this phrase at the bottom of a deed means? "Recorded according to the Origl Reced Aprl 14, 1754" (or 1784)? Was the term "Origl Reced" referring to the original sale of the land or is this a handwritten copy of the original? Sometimes the deed date was decades after the "Origl Reced" date at the bottom. Thanks, Kathy

The cemetery, dating back 184 years, will become even more prominent as the widening of the Maine Turnpike resumes this spring: The extra lanes will bring the toll road within 5 feet of the cemetery. For some tourists, the cemetery is as much a signal of one's arrival in Maine as the sign that says, ''Maine: The Way Life Should Be.'' ''A lot of people tell us they don't feel they've really arrived in Maine until they see that cemetery,'' said Dan Paradee, spokesman for the Maine Turnpike Authority in Portland. The Turnpike Authority had hoped to avoid disturbing the cemetery as part of the toll road's $135 million expansion from four lanes to six along a 30-mile stretch between York and Portland. John Roberts, right-of-way manager for the authority, said engineers were relieved that the additional 12-foot travel lane and 12-foot breakdown lane would not encroach upon the cemetery. That spared turnpike officials from moving the entire cemetery. The 20-foot-by-60-foot cemetery, which has 20 headstones, is named Mitchell-Hatch Cemetery. The first person to be buried there was Obediah Hatch, who was born in 1730 and died in 1819. Turnpike officials went to great lengths to research the cemetery. There is no way to get there other than walking through the woods; there's no evidence that there was a road leading to it, Roberts said. As part of the widening, the Turnpike Authority will install a guardrail to protect the cemetery. The authority also will replace bent and broken railings and repair the granite posts bordering the cemetery. The headstones will be sealed to protect them from pollution and road salt. The part of the widening that will bring the turnpike near the cemetery covers 2.3 miles between Wells and Kennebunk, Paradee said. Contractors also plan to complete a 1.7-mile stretch of widening between Saco and Biddeford and to finish the last two of 18 bridge projects needed to support the expanded lanes, he said. That'll leave only a widening of 6 miles, mostly in Arundel, to complete the project in summer 2004. In Kennebunk, the goal is to improve the appearance of the cemetery, but not make it so pretty that shutterbugs stop for a picture, Paradee said. Last year or so there was some discussion on the List about a cemetery to the side of the Maine Turnpike. I'm not sure if this is the cemetery that was discussed at the time, but the story will still be of interest! This article appeared in today's Boston Globe in the City/Region section. http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/097/metro/Maine_Turnpike_project_spares_cemetery+.shtml The 184 year old Mitchell-hatch Cemetery is located in Kennebunk, Exit 3. The Cemetery has been spared and will not be moved. They are going to replace the railings and repair the granite posts bordering the cemetery. The headstones will be "sealed" to protect them from pollution and road salt. I haven't asked in a while so thought I would. Benjamin Smith b. abt. 1794 married Hannah Gerry, b abt 1798 on 23 June 1817 in Hollis, Maine. Can anyone tell me where Hannah came from? Benjamin came from Biddeford I think. I have heard Hannah may have come from Arundel, but so far I'm finding nothing on her birth or parents. Thanks Darlene

I have spent considerable time searching the web to find out something about Western Maine Sanitorium, which I understand is in Hebron, but without any luck. So I'm hoping somebody on the list can tell me something about it. I have an ancestor who died there in 1929. Thank you. Carol

Sharon Sargeant informed us today that as of April 1 the rates at Massachusetts Vital Records will be double what they are now. Quite a jump considering all the money we family researchers put out for this wonderful hobby. I live in Indiana - NW Indiana at that. Should I take a vacation week and make a mad dash to Massachusetts to get the records I need before I can't afford them? That's a decision I haven't yet made. If I do decide to go I'll probably be leaving late afternoon on Monday. It will take me two days to get there. I'd appreciate it if someone would let me know what the weather and the traveling conditions are supposed to be this week. I'd be taking Route 90 through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts. VITAL RECORDS IN MAINE - The main thing I'm writing for now is to ask if anyone knows what is happening in Maine as far as vital records are concerned. I definitely have an emergency in Massachusetts and need to know if I also have one in Maine. Thanks for any help. Carol Dobson New Englander living in Indiana
