My maiden name was MEYER, and all of my life my Grandmother MEYER kept telling me that was the right way to spell the name. Well, when I started searching the German records for my great-grandfather (who is buried as August Conrad MEYER), I found that his real name was Heinrich Friedrich Christoph MEIER. Was that a shock!! And once I went back to the Freeport, ILL area searching for records for that family, and discovered that there were 2 branches of people there---MEIER and MEYER, and they ALL came from the same great-grandparents of mine~~what a surprise that was----for both bunches of people!! I think my biggest surprise though was his real name---I knew I had the right person, not only because I knew his birthdate and place, but because here his parents names were Henry MEYER and Elizabeth KRUSE MEYER. And the records from Germany identified them as Heinrich Friedrich Christian MEIER and Amalie Elizabeth KRUSE. So now I NEVER say that a name is spelled a certain way---I check them ALL out!! Isn't this a FUN "hobby"???? Strange but true!! Just wanted to throw my little tale in here!! You're right, there arn't that many "Meyers" with that spelling. In addition - the 1900 KY census has the name spelled "Meier" Don't know if that was the census takers spelling or the way my g grandfather first spelled his name when he came to this country. > > Your g grandfather would have been in my grandfather's generation, not a brother, but possibly a cousin. His name was William B and was born in New Albany. I'm still looking for his siblings or parents. I'll focus my search on Charles Christopher - maybe he'll lead me to my folks. > > Thanks again, Paula
