She received her education in South Dakota later moving to Iowa. She lived in Wall Lake and Lake View where she was employed at various restaurants in the area. She ran the Beach Shack Resort on Black Hawk Lake. In 1971 Gretchen and her children moved to Emmetsburg where she met Marlin. They were united in marriage on April 29, 1972 at St. Luke's Church. Gretchen worked at the Family Table Restaurant in Emmetsburg for several years and later Sass's in Ruthven. Gretchen loved gardening and especially her flowers. She enjoyed quilting and made many beautiful quilts for her family. Gretchen passed away Thursday, February 21, 2008 at her home near Emmetsburg at the age of 73. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; a sister, Janet Grote; a brother, Bob Meyer; and an infant son. She is survived by her husband, Marlin of Emmetsburg, IA; her children, Larry Meister of Richfield, MN, Greg Meister and his wife, Janet of Coralville, IA and Kevin Meister of Union, Mo; daughter-in-law, Jean Meister; four grandchildren, Aaron, Danielle, Joel and Kimberly Meister; a sister, Patricia Johnston of Omaha, NE; as well as many other relatives and friends.
