I realize it's been years since your inquiry, but I found a small article on Andrew Meyer today that I found interesting. It says: During the War of 1812, Baltimore resident Andrew Meyer bought and fitted out two ships at his own expense for the deffence of his country. As compensation for the loss of one of these ships, the United States government awarded him a large tract of land around Wells Lake (later Meyer's Lake). Meyer came to Canton about 1814 and, in several additional transactions with Bezaleel Wells, expanded his property to 3000 acres of prime farm land. On a knoll overlooking the lake, Meyer built his mansion with regional brick and a variety of European woods brought form Steubenville. A simple vernacular structure, its facade was enhanced by a recessed porch on the second floor under an open gable. The ornamentation of the peak and the porch are later modifications. the interior was probably remodeled about the turn of the century, but the house remained substantially unaltered from its original form. It was destroyed by fire in 1975 and today only the brick walls remain standing! . The Meyer mansion became the scene of Canton's first great social affairs, and the Meyers soon involved themselves in various activities such as the breeding of race horses. The short article includes a photo of the mansion before it was destroyed and an illumination print of the property circa 1890.
