I was off on the who and when but I will start with a brief history. From documents dated April 1978. Xavier Meyer(b.10-3-1812) immigrated ti the US between 1846 and 1848 with his wife Maria (Schmidt) and two of their children, Rosena and William. The family originated from the modern West German state fo Baden-Wurttemburg. this state is in the Black Forest region of soughwest Germany, across the Rhine river from France. Baden became a part of the German Empire at the close of the Franco-Purssian War in 1871. The family settled in Ohio by 1848 near Norwalk, where three more children were born Charles, Daniel and Mary. William Meyer (b. 5-13-1846 married Barbara Sattig (b. 9-8-1851) in Ohio. as newlyweds, William and Barbara journeyed to Missouri by covered wagon. their first born child, Charles was born near Jefferson City, Missouri in 1871. By 1874, the family had moved to Indiana. First they lived near the town of Pulaski in Indian Creek township, on what is now the FA Miller farm. There, daughter Louise was born. They then moved to Beaver Township and finally to the Charl! ey Meyer (William's older brother?) place, where they lived temporarily in a log cabin. Martha was born there in 9-20-1874. Well that's enough for tonight. Sorry but mom did not know how August fit into this but she said she had heard of the name. 1. [Meyer] Pfc. Joseph K. Meyer Jr., of Wahpeton, N.D., Korean MIA Identified
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jasche Surnames: Meyer Classification: military Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.meyer/3240/mb.ashx Message Board Post: IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 0355-08 April 30, 2008 Soldiers Missing from the Korean War are Identified (see link for complete release) The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of two U.S. servicemen, missing from the Korean War, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors. . . .and Pfc. Joseph K. Meyer Jr., of Wahpeton, N.D., both U.S. Army. Both men will be buried Saturday. . . . and Meyer will be buried in Wahpeton. Representatives from the Army met with the next-of-kin of these men to explain the recovery and identification process, and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the Secretary of the Army. . . . , and Meyer was assigned to K Company, 31st Infantry Regiment. Both were attached to the 31st Regimental Combat Team (RCT), 7th Infantry Division. The team was engaged against the Chinese People's Volunteer Forces near the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea, from late November to early December, 1950. Both men died as result of intense enemy fire, and their bodies were not recovered at the time. Between 2001 and 2005, joint U.S. and Democratic People's Republic of Korea teams, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), conducted excavations of several burial sites near the Chosin Reservoir. The sites correlate closely with defensive positions held by the 31st RCT at the time of the Chinese attacks. The teams recovered remains there believed to be those of U.S. servicemen. Analysis of the remains recovered from the sites led to the identification of several individuals, including Mason and Meyer. Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory and JPAC also used mitochondrial DNA and dental comparisons in both Meyer's and Mason's identification. For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO Web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1420. http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=11875 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
