    3. Frank & Vickie I have Borchers is my genealogy. You can check out this website: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Lake/6512/ The Borchers may have all come from the same area in Germany. Dorothy Swanson SOPHIE was born in Stroit, in the Duchy of Braunschweig on 22 Oct, 1830 (according to emigration records--Oct, 1829 by death certificate), daughter of HEINRICH CHRISTIAN BORCHERS (linen weaver) and SOPHIE MARIE HAARS. She immigrated to the United States sometime in ealy 1851. The Emigrant Index cards from the German archives have the note "Br.1.1851", which means Volume one of 1851. Three of her brothers came to America in 1854; they were: Friederich Wilhelm Borchers, born 26 Mar, 1818 in Stroit, also a linen weaver. Johann Ernst Conrad Borchers, born 27 Sep 1823 in Stroit. And finally, Heinrich Andreas Ludwig Borchers, born 24 Jun 1826 in Stroit. The younger two were not married, and their occupations were not listed. Friederich was married to Johanne Justine Caroline Steinhof in Stroit on 14 May 1843. Johanne was born 3 Jul 1821 in Groß Freden, daughter of Ilse Dorothee Steinhof. Friederich and Johanne had the following three children when they came to America: (1) Heinrich Christian Wilhelm, born 23 Jul 1847; (2) Engel Marie Dorothee, born 8 Dec 1849; and (3) Engel Sophie Caroline Auguste, born 12 Jul 1853. At this time it is not known where these three settled, but it should be noted that about this same time (mid-1850's) at least two Borchers men settled in a small community just west of the town of Crete, Indiana. They used these same family names over and over (Sophie, Engel, Dorothea, Conrad), but I haven't been able to check further into these families. In the 1850 census of the City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin was listed a Frederick Borchers from Braunsweig--relationship to our Borchers is unknown. Sophie died 31 Mar 1899, while living with her daughter, Lena Meyer, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was buried in Crystal Lake Cemetery there. His parents are listed as: Carl Wilhelm Meyer & Juliane Henriette Bamann(no dates). Rudolph married Katherine (no maiden name) born same town abt 1853 or 1856. They moved at sometime to the US to Wisconsin. There first child Helen(Lena)Juliane Meyer (my Grandmother) was born 1871 in Wisconsin. There were 10-11 more children born from this marriage. The family moved to Natick at sometime. Rudolph & Katherine are buried in the family plot in Natick,MA. The Tombstones are very hard to read due to age. Lena married William A. Goodwin October 21, 1896. I have this date from the Goodwin family Bible. The Goodwin family were from Newburyport,MA unk where they maried. They had one child Gladys M. Goodwin(my Mother) born November 26, 1898, not sure where she was born either Cambridge,MA or Falmouth,MA. In 1910 they were living on Massachusetts Ave. in Falmouth, Barnstable,MA. William was 53, Lena was 39 & Gladys was 11. They owned their own home. I spent summers there as a child. I have an old family album of the Meyer family. 3. My maiden name was MEYER, and all of my life my Grandmother MEYER kept telling me that was the right way to spell the name. Well, when I started searching the German records for my great-grandfather (who is buried as August Conrad MEYER), I found that his real name was Heinrich Friedrich Christoph MEIER. Was that a shock!! And once I went back to the Freeport, ILL area searching for records for that family, and discovered that there were 2 branches of people there---MEIER and MEYER, and they ALL came from the same great-grandparents of mine~~what a surprise that was----for both bunches of people!! I think my biggest surprise though was his real name---I knew I had the right person, not only because I knew his birthdate and place, but because here his parents names were Henry MEYER and Elizabeth KRUSE MEYER. And the records from Germany identified them as Heinrich Friedrich Christian MEIER and Amalie Elizabeth KRUSE. So now I NEVER say that a name is spelled a certain way---I check them ALL out!! Isn't this a FUN "hobby"???? Strange but true!! Just wanted to throw my little tale in here!! 2. I am interested in the Meyer's from Iowa. What part of Germany did your Meyer's come from? I am looking for family of my great grandfather, KARL J.(Johan) MEYER b. December 31, 1838 in Mecklenburg(Germany); died July 21, 1912 in Clayton County, IA. He went by many variations of the above name. In the 1880 census he is listed as Chas. Meyer. Around 1890 the spelling of Meyer changed to Meier. He was buried as Carl Meier. He was married to Elisabeth Wille around 1875. They had 11 children born in Clayton County and Allamakee County, IA between 1875 and 1894 . These are the two very Northeast counties in Iowa along the Mississippi River. I would love to hear from anyone who might have some information. We are up against a brick wall. Marlene South Dakota

Karl John married Wilhelmina Meyer and Caroline married Carl Dischler. The mystery is this, John disappeared off the radar screen and no one has been able to trace him. Could your John Henry Lange be the same as my missing John Lange? Some family lore has Karl John coming to the USA in 1882 to join family members already in Iowa. ???

My information is very sketchy, and came from a book my Grandmother - Alvina (Meyer) Schwardt had. She was the daughter of William Chris Meyer (1873 - 1929), and Anna Margaretta Lange (1879 - 1935) . They were married 12-8-1899, and had 11 children, I'm not sure of the order of the birth except that she was born in 1904. My Gggrandparents then were Heinrich (Henry) Christopher Meyer, and Doretha (I have a name of Hesstermann - which I had assumed was a last name), John Henry Lange (1858-1929), and Marguerita Mohnke (1856 - ?) Married 1878. So as you can see I really don't have much to go on. Thanks for your fast response though.

I have no record of any Lange's married to any Meyer's other than my grandparents, Herman Lange and Wilhelmina Meyer. My grandmother was born in Pomeroy. My ggrandfather Heinrich Christoph (or Cheistoph) Meyer, b. 1844, married Dorothea Meyer (no relation according to my sources). They had children Sophie 1872, Caroline Louise Wilhelmine Katherine 1873, Henry 1876, Wilhelmine Ernestine Katherine 1879 (my grandmother), Fried. Heinrich Christian 1884, and Ferdinand Heinrich 1884. Ggrandfather Heinrich had at least one brother that I have a record of, namely Christian Heinrich Meyer, b 1849, who married Katrina Gottschalk, b. 1854. They had children Herman Heinrich Friedrich 1879, Ernst August Wilhelm Heinrich 1879, Ida Lena Dorothea Elisabeth 1884, Richard Heinrich Friedrich 1885, and Wilhelm Heinrich 1891. These are all that I have records of. There could have been others.! Could my Heinrich Christoph Meyer be your Chris Meyer and my Dorothea Meyer be your Dorethea? Don't know. There seems to be an awful lot of Meyer families coming from Pomeroy at this time in history (population less than 800 today) for there not to be some sort of connection. My Lange family has roots in Rockwell City which is also in Calhoun County, Iowa. If this has any connection to your family or you can shed some light on any family connections please let me know. I have a copy of my Meyer family decendents starting with Johann Henrich Meyer, b. 1810, which was posted on Genealogy.com by my cousin Bill Lange.

    3. Hi Melissa - I live in Saskatchewan, Canada. I have Birtha/Bertha Meyer on the 1900 Browning Twp, Taylor County census, born Aug 1844 Germany. She is listed with her two sons, Joseph (17 - Oct 1874) and Theodore (14 - Nov 1877). The census states she had 8 children and that 8 children were still alive at the time of the census but they are not shown. Her husband is said to be Peter. The census states she came to the USA in 1897 and the two sons came in 1891 and both were naturalized. A further son is believed to be Arthur and he may have been in Minnesota Lakes, Fairbault County, MN. Theodore Meyer is shown in 1901 as living in Browning Twp, Taylor County when he marries Sophie ASMUS and they married in Medford Twp, Taylor County. In 1902 a daughter, Alice Meyer, is born in Milwaukee and in 1904 a son, Glen Cornelius Joseph Meyer, is born in Milwaukee, WI. This family eventually ended up in Saskatchewan about 1906.
