    3. Newell Hall In answer to your question about the original census records for Washington County Maine. The original records for the census years 1850, 60 & 70 are housed in the probate office at the Washington County Court House in Machias, Maine. They have been bound in books by town. In addition they have been indexed, also by towns, on file cards. If you did not know, when the census was taken a copy was made from the original census papers and sent to the state, from the state copy a third copy was made for the federal copy and from that third copy the microfilm was made. The original was kept in the local county court house. As you can imagine not all survived. We in Washington County are very fortunate to have the original papers. As you can also imagine there are many mistakes between that first and third copy...
