Handwritten at the top of the first clipping - Nov. 30, 1928.) CHARLES S. BRANNEN, OLD RESIDENT, DIED HERE EARLY TO-DAY Retired From Provincial Civil Service in 1918 After Thirty Years, RECALLED EARLY TIMES IN THIS CITY Married Sister of Late Canon Roberts -- Golden Wedding Observed in 1925. Charles Sterling Brannen, one of Fredericton's oldest native residents, died this morning at his home, 148 Argyle street, in the ninety-second year of his age. He was born in Fredericton May 8th, 1837, and resided here all his lifetime. For ten years he had been on the retired list of the Provincial Civil Service, having received superannuation in 1918 after thirty years in the office of the Provincial Secretary. In recognition of his long and faithful service the Imperial Service Medal was presented to him shortly after his retirement. In the long period in which he was in the Provincial Civil Service he served under twelve Premiers. Throughout the entire period he was associated with the late R. W. L. Tibbits, Deputy Provincial Secretary. The deceased was a son of Charles Brannen, for fifty-six years Deputy Sheriff and jailer of York county, and was born in the old jail which stood on the westerly side of King street below Regent street. After the death of his father W. W. Long was appointed to succeed him and the family removed to another residence. He was married December 2nd, 1875, to Agnes K. Roberts, daughter (continued on Page 5.) CHARLES S. BRANNEN DIED HERE TO-DAY (Continued from Page 12.) of the late Dr. George Roberts, head-master of the Collegiate School which later became the Fredericton High School. The golden wedding was celebrated with appropriate ceremony three years ago. For many years Mr. Brannen was Senior Warden of the Parish Church of Fredericton of which his brother-in-law the late Canon Roberts was rector for the greater part of his lifetime. Mrs. Brannen passed away about two years ago. Thought his lifetime Mr. Brannen took the keenest interest in matters military and as he was an active man prior to the departure of the Imperial troops from Fredericton in 1869, his recollection of the various regiments, their officers and other ranks was of the brightest and he had many interesting reminiscences of them. Bands of music also were a subject of interest to him and in addition to the numerous fine military bands which were in Fredericton at various times, he recollected local bands of years ago. He himself played with the Masonic Band and other organizations in Fredericton. He also had clear recollection of law enforcement in York County. Prior to taking a Provincial appointment Mr. Brannen was in business in this city retiring in 1878 to enter the civil service. He was a charter member of Victoria Lodge, I. O. O. F., and of his fellow members of the time Charles A. Sampson and John Black of this city are all who are left. Surviving are one son, Sterling Brannen and one daughter Miss Adelaide G. Brannen, both of Fredericton. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon from the late home. There will be prayers by Rev. A. F. Bate at the house at 3.10 and service at the Parish Church at 3.30 by Rev. Mr. Bate assisted by Very Rev. Dean Neales. Interment will be made at Forest Hill.
