Hello: I'm glad this came up. My gggrandparents filed an "Intention of Marriage" in Greenfield, MA in 1846. But that is the only record I can find. Can I assume they married there? The town clerk said that there was no further record of either a license or a certificate. Or could they file an Intention in one place and then marry somewhere else??? Thanks. Judy >Intentions (1st date) of marriage have to be filed at least three days >before the license (2nd date) can be issued and a certificate (3rd date) >will be issued a few days after the marriage is performed, especially when >a copy of the license is requested. This practice still goes on, in Maine >at least, today. My son just got married in March. > >Hope this helps! > >Linisa
And in one more variation, some of my ancestors seem to have filed intentions in more than one town.
