    2. William Henry Plummer (originally spelled Plumer) was born in 1832 in Washington County, Maine, the youngest child of a prominent pioneer family. His father, older brother and sister's husband were all sea captains, but the youngest son--intelligent, good-looking, and of slight build--had consumption and could not carry on the seagoing tradition. Thus his parents provided him with what was described as "a good early education" in a village near the family farm.
