Bill... General John Cooper was the first sheriff of Washington County Maine serving from 1790 to 1820. After he retired he moved to Cooper, Maine (about 20 miles from Machias) - the town was named for him. I have been very interested in John Cooper as first my grand daughter transcribed his personal papers and that collection was given to the Washington Co. Courthouse and the County Commissioners for safe keeping... and second I "did" his ancestry for the upcoming Vol. 7 of the Maine Genealogical Society series "Maine Families in 1790".. If you send me your snail mail address I will send you a copy of that entry. Besides information on him is shows his parents and his children... who they married etc...
