    1. Re: [MEWASHIN-L] Re Inactivity of this list.
    2. Dear Frances: Thanks for your response to my post. I have not been into or through Washington County since about 1982, when I passed through with my family on our way up to Cape Breton Island. I remember that the coast of Maine there was quite beautiful, but at that time I had no idea there were Whitneys in Washington County. If I had specific questions I might address them to the Washington County Historical Society, probably by mail. For years I lived in southeastern Kentucky, but have moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland for my retirement. So, I'm a little closer, but not much. Without a specific research project involving the Whitneys of Washington County, it is unlikely that I will take the time to come up there and search. Nonetheless, I am very interested in learning anything that might come along on the maillist about the Whitneys, and would be able to contribute some information about this family in general to someone who had found their way back to the Whitneys there and couldn't go further back to the ancestors of the Washington Co. Whitneys. Happy Hunting. Allan E. Green

    1. [MEWASHIN-L] Jonesboro Whitney's
    2. Valdine C. Atwood
    3. I have done some work on the Whitney family of Jonesboro, Maine ... although I am not related to the family. The Whitney family came early to what is now Jonesboro, Maine - then Chandler's River. The first mention of the family from the 1st book of Records of Plantation #22 is the family birth records for the children of Joel and Mary Whitney - the first is for daughter Mary dated Sept. 4, 1766.. The family birth records in the 1st book of records includes the following men Ephraim,, Reuben .. Joshua .. Gustavus Fellows Whitney ... and Joseph ... The Whitney families were a big part of the early history of the town of Jonesboro .. As I have said above the vital records show many, many listings for the Whitney name.. the name is still in the area with 16 listings in our local telephone book. If anyone has a specific name they wish me to check out I will look to see if it is included in these early records .. but this offer only is for Jonesboro names. 3. My family 'passed" through Washington County - i.e.; one generation moved there and settled there, but descendants moved on to Aroostook or Kennebec Counties. I did receive excellent replies and suggestions when I posted queries to this list. I am always looking for cousins and occasionally post to see if any are watching the list. We just ran a Roll Call on the Aroostook list, which has increased the replies. perhaps it would increase this list activity and get contacts for individuals. 1. Re: [MEWASHIN-L]Whitney of Massacusetts
    2. Jean and other, Perhaps someone will have information about two of my elusive Whitney wives. Benjamin Whitney was born 6/6/1643 and died 3/26/1723 in Watertown. I have only the first name "Jane" for his wife. They were married circa 1690 in York. Captain Nathan Whitney was born 4/30/1742 in Biddeford/Saco ME. He came to Columbia Falls in 1768 and died in Columbia before 4/7/1834. He also resided in Addison ME. His wife's name was "Patience Bernard/Barnard." However Early Pleasant River Families said her last name was possibly Burnham and she was born 1742 in Portsmouth, now Greenland, NH. I will be glad to share any information I have on Washington Co or other families. My web site is at www.vol.com/~vandy. Thanks for any help, Karen Howell Vandy88@aol.com Glidden, Smith, Davis, McDowell, Scott, Cox, Cumberland, Dodge, Preston, Shaw, Loring, Hitchings, etc. from Washington County

    1. Re: [MEWASHIN-L] Re Inactivity of this list.
    2. Dear Bob and others: As far as I know, (which isn't really very far, since none of these people are in my own line -- I'm just gathering data wherever I can find it to add to the collection being put together by the Whitney Research Group), the Whitneys in Washington County got there late in the 18th Century - perhaps around or soon after 1780 - and were there for several generations after that. There is a village of Whitneyville not too far from Machias. My subscription to the maillist was intended to allow me to spot queries that included this specific surname, and try to find information about Whitneys that we of the WRG didn't yet have. If there are others on the MEWASHIN-L list who have Whitney connections, I would be happy to try to fill in whatever information is currently available about those Whitney people, and thus make a contribution to others. Sincerely, Allan E. Green

    2. Dear Friends: I read the subject titles of the posts that come through this list, but I have only the most tenuous of connections to Washington County and I have not yet seen the Whitney surname come up in the subject line on a posting. Since I know nothing of any other county families, I cannot offer any help. If someone has Whitneys and would like to connect them outside the county, perhaps I could help. Allan E. Green

    3. I, too, have wondered the same thing. I have placed some queries on this list but receive few responses. Other lists to which I subscribe have many helpful individuals who are willing to share or have access to information to which others of us do not. I am most willing to share what data I have if I see a query relative to my family. Hopefully, more interest will occur in this list. Revae California
