Hi, This is not a genealogy question but it is bothering me a little. I hope someone can tell me. Every time I post a message about the Thistle Mission Band, I get it returned to me by Moe who is apparently subscribed to the Washington County list. The "replied to message" - that is the message I sent - is just garbage symbols. I don't know what they mean. Am I the only one that gets these replies? Am I doing something wrong? Hi Everyone, I am new to searching in Maine. Most of my research has been in Mass. But I just found some of my family in Maine. Jeremiah Casey born 1855 in Calais, Maine. His fathers name was Joseph Casey born in Ireland. Joseph Casey married around 1885 in Calais Maine. Does anyone have any birth indexes or marriage indexes going back that far. Also here are a few questions if any one can help me. 1- What County is Calais Maine in. 2-How do I obtain a birth Cert. for someone born in 1855 in Calais, Maine 3-How do I obtain a Marriage Cert. for someone married in 1855 in Calais. I am sure they were Catholic. 4- Also any hints how to search the 1860 Census for them. The FHC has something like 40 films for Maine in 1860. I was requested to submit these newspaper clippings with just the surnames for the subject rather than "Thistle Mission Band Newspaper Clippings." I have had several responses from people who have said that they read, and enjoy, the clippings because although their surname isn't mentioned, their family is from the area and they find bits of interesting information. I don't want to take the chance of any of these people missing the clippings because of a changed subject line so I am compromising. I have added a list of surnames at the beginning of the message. I have ancestors from the Eastport area. William Marshall, b 1844 in Eastport to Edward and Nancy Marshall. None of them are in the 1850 ME census. Family lore mentions Pleasant Point. All I can find now is the Indian Reservation. Did non-Native Americans live at Pleasant Point? If so, are there records out there, and why is Pleasant Point not found in the 1850 ME Census? The death occurred at an early hour this morning of Oliver Thomas Smith at his home, 218 George street, after some weeks illness at the age of 69 years. Deceased was born in Fredericton, a son of the late Moses and Elizabeth (Cook) Smith. He lived all his life in Fredericton and early in life learned his trade at shoemaking and was for some years in the employ of one of the larrigan factories. He was door-keeper at the New Brunswick Legislative Building and held the office at the time of his death. He was also a member of the session of St. Paul's United Church and prominent in all its activities. He represented St. Anne's Ward at the City Council for a number of years and he was appointed an assistant assessor of Fredericton in 1929, holding that position at the time of his death. He was a man of most pleasing personality, one with whom it was always a pleasure to converse. He was a kind father and devoted husband and will be missed in his home, the church and city. He was in earlier life prominently identified with the 71st York Battalion and known throughout the province. Agnes Kerr, Mrs. Edward McGinn, Mrs. John Bonnar, Miss Evelyn Smith, Fredericton; Mrs. Fannie Brown, Saint John, and Mrs. Sadie Weldon, Newburyport, Mass. The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon with prayers at the house at 2.10 o'clock by Rev. George Telford and service at St. Paul's United Church at 2.30 o'clock by Mr. Telford and interment in Rural Cemetery. The flag at City Hall is flying half-mast in tribute to Mr. Smith. The death occurred last night at 8.20 o'clock at Victoria Public Hospital, Fredericton, of James Byron Wood, after a very short illness, at the age of 36 years. Deceased was born at Rusagonis, a son of Charles and the late Mrs. Wood. For the past ten years he had been residing at Minto where he was an accountant. Sunday he complained of not feeling well but paid no attention to it. Yesterday morning his condition was such that he was brought to the hospital at 11 o'clock, suffering with throat trouble and last night his death followed. He was a young man of many fine traits, courteous to everyone, a kind and loving husband and father and his death will be learned of with sincere regret by his many friends in different parts of Canada and the United States. He is survived by his widow, formerly Miss Viola M. Smith, of Nasonworth; two children, Carol and Merilyn Dawn; his father, Charles Wood; a brother, John R. Wood, of Rusagonis, and five sisters, Mrs. R. S. Gregg, Port William, N. B.; Mrs. Haviland Hovey, Moncton; Mrs. Earl Fraser, Fredericton, and Mrs. Harold Foster, Minto. His mother died in 1929 and last December, a brother, Burton Wood, died from monoxide poisoning. The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon from the home of his father at Rusagonis where service will be conducted at two o'clock by Rev. Mr. Ricker and interment made at Rusagonis.
