Greer, Well Known Citizen, Was in Usual Good Health, While on his way down Queen street on Saturday night about nine o'clock Solomon F. Greer suffered a heart attach and died while being carried into a store. He was 58 years old. Mr. Greer, who was born at New Maryland, was a son of the late John and Caroline Estabrooks Greer. He had lived in Fredericton for the past 30 years or more and was a carpenter by trade. He had been employed on a number of large contracts in Fredericton and last week was working at a house in the western part of the city. Saturday he was in his usual good health, ate his supper and afterwards went uptown to do some shopping. He had been in several of the stores and on his way home was seized with a heart attack. He made a movement as if to take hold of a building or something to steady him and fell on the sidewalk. Passersby picked him up and carried him into the store but he died before he was placed on the floor. Dr. J. G. Turner was called and pronounced him dead on arrival. Dr. Charles MacKay, the coroner, was called and said death was due to natural causes and his body was removed to the undertaking parlors. Mr. Greer was one of the prominent members of St. Paul's United Church, active in all good work and possessed of a kindly disposition that won him friends. He was upright and honest in his dealings and his death under such sad circumstances will be learned of with sincere regret. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Jean; two brothers, William Greer, in British Columbia; James Greer, Taunton, Mass.; six sisters, Mrs. Fred Wilson, Coppen, Sask.; Mrs. Nathaniel Beal, Grand Manan; Mrs. Hayward McCain, Burton; Mrs. Edwin Horncastle, Mrs. D B. Green, Fredericton; Mrs. William Girdwood, Upper Stewacke, N.S., at present in the city. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon from his late home 648 Union street, with service at two o'clock by Rev. A. Frank MacLean and interment in Rural Cemetery.
----- Original Message ----- From: bbffrrpp To: mewashin-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, September 04, 2000 7:05 AM Subject: Town Clerks in Wash. County, Maine - computerized ?? Good morning, I have been researching the KIDDER surname for 7-8 years. And, several generations of Kidders were centered around Princeton, Maine. I have corresponded with the office of the Princeton Town Clerk a few times over the 7 years. A new lady took over the job close to 2 years ago, and she told me that she was just then starting the project of putting all the records of that office into a computer. Imagine the work involved! I was just wondering what the percentage rate was. How many Town Clerks in Washington County have a computer for their records, and how many don't? There was one Kidder who started my line of Kidder men in northern Maine*. He actually first settled in St. Stephen, NB, the sister-town of Calais, ME. But, his son, as an adult, moved to Calais. I call them "the two Calvin's." Even though the first Calvin might have had a Land Grant in Princeton, ME, it appears to have been the 3 sons of the second Calvin who finally settled there. But, that is where my great-grandfather was born in 1870. *The KIDDER surname was in Maine before it gained Statehood. My Calvin Kidder traveled through Washington County around 1785. But, a Richard Kidder settled in the towns near the present Dresden, Maine, around 1765. Between 1800 and 1820 twenty Kidder cousins were living in Maine. (All descendants of James Kidder (1626-1676) of Cambridge and Billerica, MA.) To get back to "the two Calvin's," Calvin Kidder (the son) married a Mary WILKINS in Amity, ME, around 1834. They had 7 children (I think)** One of the sons was Joseph Kidder, and he married a Clarissa WILKINS. She was the oldest of 6 or 7 children of George and Mary WILKINS. According to an 1861 Census they were living in Canterbury, NB, but they were listed as being "American," and 4 of their children were born in "America." If anyone knows where a George and Mary Ann Wilkins would have lived as a married couple from about 1835 to about 1852 in Washington County, I'd very much appreciate the information. **Either Clarissa Wilkins was the oldest child b1847, or George Wilkins was the oldest child, b1838. On the 1861 Census, he was a Head of Household at Age 22 with a wife, Sarah Wilkins. (He was also an "American.") "Calvin" and Mary Kidder who lived between Amity, ME, and Calais, ME, had well over 30 grandchildren.*** Possibly the number is closer to 40. So, there must be descendants of this Calvin Kidder (1799-1891) still living in Washington County. ***One of the reference books lists this Calvin and Mary Kidder as having a son, James Kidder b.1847. But, I can find no other reference to him anywhere. My personal roadblock (brick wall) in this research is finding out who the first Calvin Kidder (his father) married. There is no mention of a Mrs. Calvin Kidder from 1785 to 1834 anywhere! The first Calvin Kidder was killed in a mail-boat accident in the St. Croix River in March of 1799. His son, Calvin Kidder, wasa born in January of 1799. The only other Kidder woman who would have been the right age to have been the first Calvin Kidder's wife......was a Mrs. Mary Kidder who died in Portland, ME, at age 43, in 1819. But, again, no one has any information on her. AND, why was she living down in Portland, when her son was up in St. Stephen, NB? Unless she was ill and hospitalized in Portland? And, there is no record anywhere of any siblings of the Calvin Kidder b1799. Kidders ALWAYS had a dozen or so children. Why did this Calvin Kidder b1765 only have ONE child? (He came up from New Ipswich, NH.) Thanks for listening, Betty (near Lowell, MA)
WASHINGTON COUNTY, MAINE RECORDS PRESERVATION FUND Cemeteries have gravestones, but the records tell the story… Deteriorating vital records, incomplete records, broken gravestones, unmarked graves, and records destroyed by fire come to one's mind when discussing Washington County, Maine. Out of the concern for preserving what is left of the records for future generations has emerged the Washington County, Maine Records Preservation Fund. WCMRPF is a not for profit trust fund. The mission of the WCMRPF is to preserve and publish the historical records of the various localities, cities, towns, townships, plantations, and other administrative jurisdictions located in Washington County, Maine. Sharon Howland is the Grantor and Trustee of the WCMRPF. She is the author of Calais, Maine Vital Records Prior to 1892 and Vital Records of Alexander, Maine, and her proceeds from the books were used as seed money for the fund. Although Sharon currently lives in Waltham, MA, she is the seventh generation to live in Washington County, Maine. She is also co-editor of WKRP (Washington/Charlotte Kounty Records Preservation) and is under contract with Picton Press to do a series of genealogical aids concerning Washington County, ME. An Advisory Committee has been established to help with decision making. The committee as a whole has an incredible amount of talent. Valdine Atwood of Machias has years of experience with genealogy, the DAR, and running the Burnham Tavern Museum. George Handran, a lawyer living in Boston who drafted the trust fund, is a certified genealogist, has ancestors in Washington County, and is the treasurer of the National Genealogical Society. Terry Hussey of Milbridge is connected with the Milbridge Historical Society and Museum. Gerald LaPointe of Calais and Wakefield, MA, is a history buff and is an experienced grant writer. Frances Raye of Perry rounds out the committee with expertise in genealogical research. She is also President of the Washington County Genealogical Society and runs the Barracks Museum in Eastport. The first major project will be to inventory the whole county to see what records are available. These records will include: births, marriages, deaths, tax records, cemetery records, cemetery maps, gravestone inscriptions, church records, newspapers, and other records. The condition of the records and whether they have been microfilmed or photocopied will be part of the inventory. There is one exception to the inventory and that is the Court House in Machias. It will not be included in the inventory, because an archival committee is already in place for that building. After the inventory has been completed, the major concern will be to copy the records. Most of the records in the county have never been microfilmed. Once a record has been copied, then the preservation of the record itself and publication will take place. Although Sharon is currently under contract with Picton Press, others can apply to WCMRPF for help with publication costs to help preserve records. In order to complete the above phases of the process, WCMRPF will need substantial funding. This will be used when applying for matching grants to further enhance the preservation of records. All amounts of tax deductible contributions are gratefully accepted. All monies will be used to ensure that this essential information is preserved for future generations. Here is a chance for people to help preserve their own ancestors' stories. Above all, this means that Washington County will have its own records preservation fund. Send tax deductible contributions to: Washington County, Maine Records Preservation Fund c/o Machias Savings Bank 108 North St. Calais, ME 04619 For further information about the fund contact: Sharon Howland E-mail: shwkrp@aol.com Web Page: http://hometown.aol.com/shwkrp/shwkrp.html

HI! I am willing to do family name look ups in the following books that I have from a trip to New Brunswick Canada. They are: The Story of Knowlesville by Judson M. Corey and Over the Portage Early History of the Upper Miramichi by William MacKinnon. If anyone would like lookups you MUST do the following; send email to mfoley1@capecod.net in the subject line : Canada Look ups In your message the family name if it is a common name Please put first name. The books cover the years 1780-1840. Each book has different information. I will NOT do lookups for those who send to the list. As I do not want the List made long for those who have no need for it. I will send to the list and the person so sent for the information if that is all right with everyone. Good Luck Michelle
Thanks to all of you who have tried to help me find Julia and Urban Hoyt. Can't find them anywhere so I'm just going to assume that they're still living. He'd be 172 and she'd be 160 - I should be hearing about them soon on CNN. I've just learned that some of my Maine family seems to have come from Nova Scotia. I know nothing about this area, particularly the area of Cornwallis, Kings Co. Where would that be and where would the civil records be? ANY help will be appreciated. Have a good Labor Day and keep the labors to a minimum. Pat, in the Northwest

In my previous post, I meant to say western Washington County (Addison, Harrington, Columbia, etc) but the land division may have been more widespead(?). Newell
A resolve of the MA General Court on 21 Jun 1793 resulted in a division and distribution of lands in eastern Washington County in 1794 to a number of the settlers there at that time. I've referred to these land grants a number of times but have never really understood why this was done or other issues it must have created, eg, whose land was being divided?, what happened to land transfers (deeds) that took place prior to the division?, were the settlers given the lots without charge?, who decided who got what?, etc. Does anyone understand in some detail what this resolve of the MA Court was and how it was administered? Thanks Newell Hall

Thanks Val (and my apologies for the 'nothing' message that went out before this one - my send key glitched!). Two additional requests for those in Machias -- on my direct line of descent from Rev. Benjamin Balch and Joanna O'Brien. 1) I have never been able to locate birth dates for Morris O'Brien's children or information on his origin other than statements that he was 'from Cork'. I've found a lot about the sons involvement in the Revolutionary War but that is about it. Does anyone have anything more on this family? 2) My great-grandfather and great-great uncle died here on the west coast. They were both born in Trescott or Lubec. I am curious if anything was printed in Machias regarding their deaths -- if someone has access to old newspapers/microfilm I would be interested in anything printed in Machias about these deaths: Augustus Balch, drowned in Oakville, Washington, January 22, 1894. Capt. Lafayette Balch, died suddenly in San Francisco, California November 25, 1862. Thanks in advance for any help. Karin Morey snail mail: 17940 S. Country Village Drive Oregon City OR 97045
