    3. The 1881 Washington County Atlas contains a map of Marion, Edmunds, Dennysville & Plantation #14 (page 24) showing the settler's lots. Lot #5 in Marion was directly on the town line between Edmunds & Marion, and appears to be just to the right of (including half of) Bog Lake. It was a 156 acre lot. 3. In my pursuit of a Butler family of the Marion/Meddybemps/Charlotte/Baring area I visited the Calais Free Library a week ago to look at census films... What was interesting was a slim volume entitled: "Early Church Records of the Baptist Church in Town of Charlotte (begins 1829)" It has many birth/death vitals, as well as baptisms and church 'leavings', and I found it especially useful for sorting out families in the 1830s and 1840s. SIDELIGHT: On the BUTLER family - it clinched the fact of an Ephraim Butler Sr. & Jr., and indicates an association with Thankful Butler (sister) - all leaving the church around 1840 (they moved to Baring about then.) 3. Main Surnames:; BRANNEN, ROBERTS, CHARTERS, BALL; Also: TIBBETS, LONG, SAMPSON, BLACK, BATE, NEALES, PEARSON. (This obituary is made up of two clippings pasted together. Handwritten at the top of the first clipping - Nov. 30, 1928.) CHARLES S. BRANNEN, OLD RESIDENT, DIED HERE EARLY TO-DAY Retired From Provincial Civil Service in 1918 After Thirty Years, RECALLED EARLY TIMES IN THIS CITY Married Sister of Late Canon Roberts -- Golden Wedding Observed in 1925. Charles Sterling Brannen, one of Fredericton's oldest native residents, died this morning at his home, 148 Argyle street, in the ninety-second year of his age. He was born in Fredericton May 8th, 1837, and resided here all his lifetime. For ten years he had been on the retired list of the Provincial Civil Service, having received superannuation in 1918 after thirty years in the office of the Provincial Secretary. In recognition of his long and faithful service the Imperial Service Medal was presented to him shortly after his retirement. In the long period in which he was in the Provincial Civil Service he served under twelve Premiers. Throughout the entire period he was associated with the late R. W. L. Tibbits, Deputy Provincial Secretary. The deceased was a son of Charles Brannen, for fifty-six years Deputy Sheriff and jailer of York county, and was born in the old jail which stood on the westerly side of King street below Regent street. After the death of his father W. W. Long was appointed to succeed him and the family removed to another residence. He was married December 2nd, 1875, to Agnes K. Roberts, daughter (continued on Page 5.) CHARLES S. BRANNEN DIED HERE TO-DAY (Continued from Page 12.) of the late Dr. George Roberts, head-master of the Collegiate School which later became the Fredericton High School. The golden wedding was celebrated with appropriate ceremony three years ago. For many years Mr. Brannen was Senior Warden of the Parish Church of Fredericton of which his brother-in-law the late Canon Roberts was rector for the greater part of his lifetime. Mrs. Brannen passed away about two years ago. Thought his lifetime Mr. Brannen took the keenest interest in matters military and as he was an active man prior to the departure of the Imperial troops from Fredericton in 1869, his recollection of the various regiments, their officers and other ranks was of the brightest and he had many interesting reminiscences of them. Bands of music also were a subject of interest to him and in addition to the numerous fine military bands which were in Fredericton at various times, he recollected local bands of years ago. He himself played with the Masonic Band and other organizations in Fredericton. He also had clear recollection of law enforcement in York County. Prior to taking a Provincial appointment Mr. Brannen was in business in this city retiring in 1878 to enter the civil service. He was a charter member of Victoria Lodge, I. O. O. F., and of his fellow members of the time Charles A. Sampson and John Black of this city are all who are left. Surviving are one son, Sterling Brannen and one daughter Miss Adelaide G. Brannen, both of Fredericton. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon from the late home. There will be prayers by Rev. A. F. Bate at the house at 3.10 and service at the Parish Church at 3.30 by Rev. Mr. Bate assisted by Very Rev. Dean Neales. Interment will be made at Forest Hill. (Handwritten at the top of the clipping - June 25, 1932.) Celebrate Diamond Anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Jeremiah Charters, of New Maryland, today celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary at their home with members of the immediate family gathered around them. Mr. and Mrs. Charters have lived at New Maryland all their lives and were married in the Church of England there by Rev. Mr. Pearson. Mr. Charters is the son of Adam and Eliza Charters and Mrs. Charters, before her marriage, was Miss Emma Ball, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Ball, of New Maryland, also ten children are still living of the family, the most of whom will visit their parents to-day.

    3. In answer to the recent question "Does anyone know if Frances Raye has finished the Eastport Cemetery inscriptions" - the answer is not yet... it is still a 'work in progress'. This has been a major project and besides copying the inscriptions she has been checking with Eastport City Hall to add information such as birth dates if they do not appear on the tombstones. At present I believe she has over 9 notes filled. Now as to her ability to answer questions ... I just spoke to her on the phone. They are waiting for a call as to when her husband Harry will be scheduled for heart bypass surgery at Eastern Maine Medical Center at Bangor - so suffice to say this is not a good time to contact her for research projects. She did say that in a few weeks she hopes she will be able to settle back to research but for now it is out of the question. She also asked that if anyone wants her help to please send a letter (rather than e-mail) with the information that is needed. Her address is: Frances Raye 410 Shore Road, Perry, ME 04667 ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! 3. Dear Listers: Saturday (tomorrow) Oct. 21, the HCGS will have its regular meeting at 2:30 pm at the Riverview Room of the Ellsworth Library. Ralph Stanley from Southwest Harbor will be speaking about the Gertrude Carroll diaries which have recently come to light. They were written from 1888 until just before her death in 1917. Anyone with any interest in genealogy or history of our area is very welcome to attend these meetings. We always have a pretty good time; and as a bonus we get an excuse to spend time upstairs at the Library's Whittier Collection which is one of the best genealogy resources in the State. Hope to see you there! Again my thanks to the List Owners for permission to make notice of these meetings. J of J & J

    3. Main Surnames: McCLARY, DONALDSON, HOWIE, NORSWORTHY, MITCHELL, ARNOLD, JAMIESON, GEROW; Also: GRANT, WHARTON, ROSS, TRAFTON, CROWE, KIERSTEAD, HOWSON. (There is no date on this clipping, but the death of Mrs. Annie McClary, wife of Harry A. McClary on January 8, 1938 was in the message "Newspaper Clippings-46.") MRS. HARRY M'CLARY DIED THIS MORNING Pneumonia Claimed One of Best Known Women in This Section of Province, The death occurred this morning at her home, "Cherry Bank Cottage", Springhill, of Mrs. Annie Donaldson McClary, wife of Harry A. McClary, after a week's illness with pneumonia. Mrs. McClary was born in Fredericton, a daughter of the late Robert and Annie (Howie) Donaldson and lived her entire life here and at Springhill. She attended Fredericton schools and was most active as a young woman in the affairs of St. Paul's Church before union. She was active in Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church and deeply interested in St. Peter's Church, Springhill, of which Mr. McClary is an officer. She did not confine her activities to the church but rather in the highways and byways of life, where she looked after the less fortunate people. Her home in Springhill was always open and many a basket of provisions was sent to a needy family and nothing said about it. The unfortunate transients, who often spent the night in the way station at Springhill will remember Mrs. McClary for her kindness, she always leaving a basket of food in the station so that none would go hungry. Her love for dumb animals was known all over Canada and in many parts of the United States, she keeping a careful eye on animals in Springhill and in the city as a whole. Mrs. McClary never found the hour too late or too early to go out and look into complaints about cruelty and accompanied members of the R. C. M. P. on many investigations and saw that the animals concerned were either put to sleep or better cared for. She was intensely found of children and always had one or more around her. Her love for the aged and sick was known to everyone and she thought nothing of walking miles to lend assistance or stay up at night with some one who otherwise would have been alone. At Christmas time she looked after many and was never as happy as when she was doing something for someone else. Her last thought was of herself and those who benefitted by her ministrations will long revere her memory. Mrs. McClary was in Fredericton a few days before Christmas and met and talked with many of her friends. She was busy buying gifts for children and shutins at Springhill and in Fredericton and it is thought she may have contracted a cold at that time. Pneumonia developed a week ago and her death this morning has closed a life well filled with good and abundant deeds and abundantly lived. In her passing Fredericton and Springhill have lost a woman whose good deeds will follow her. Her death will occasion sorrow wherever she was known. Mrs. McClary was a member of the York-Sunbury Historical Society and was deeply interested in its work, giving several valuable gifts as well as her support. She was a former member of the Women's Institute at Kingsclear and a silent worker in many good causes. She is survived by her husband, Harry A. McClary, and a step-daughter Mrs. Weymss Grant, Woodstock, and several nephews and nieces, one of whom. Miss Agnes Wharton of Jamaica Plains, Mass., was with her when she died. The funeral will take place on Monday afternoon with service at her late home at two o'clock by Rev. Dr. George E. Ross and interment made in Rural Cemetery, Fredericton. DIED NORSWORTHY -- At Dalhousie, N. B., on December 3rd, 1941, Mrs. Herbert R. Norsworthy, formerly Miss Mitchell of South Devon. The body will arrive in Fredericton to-morrow at noon and be taken to the Reformed Baptist Church, where it will rest until tomorrow afternoon at 3.30 o'clock, when service will be conducted by Rev. P. J. Trafton and interment made in Sunny Bank Cemetery. ARNOLD -- At Victoria Public Hospital, Fredericton, N. B., December 2nd, 1941, Fred Gilman Arnold, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd J. Arnold, Barker's Point, aged twenty-three years. Funeral from the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jamieson, Marysville, tomorrow afternoon with service at 1.45 o'clock by Rev. A. G. Crowe and interment made in the Baptist Cemetery, Marysville. GEROW -- At Fredericton, N. B., December 1st, 1941, Dr. Aulder L. Gerow, aged fifty-four years.
