    1. [MEWASHIN-L] Ellis Island Records On Line Update
    2. Marilyn
    3. Hi Everyone, According to officials at Statute of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, access is improving, but currently the best time to access the database is between 1 and 4 a.m. EDT. During the past weekend http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/ had between 17.5 and 18 million successful hits. To handle the load, the original 10 servers and three backups have been joined by 10 additional loaned servers. More memory was added also. One of the glitches -- the onscreen registration request form problem for international users -- is being worked on and should be fixed soon. Originally it would accept only U.S. ZIP codes. This Ellis Island database of 22 million individuals contains the names of approximately 12 million immigrants who actually were processed through Ellis Island, the names of about five million who arrived as first- or second-class passengers and went through immigration formalities onboard their ships, plus another five million U.S. citizens returning from abroad and ship crew members. This database covers approximately 71 percent of all passenger arrival records of the U.S. during the 32-year period from 1892 to 1924. Marilyn

    3. Newell asked: > My understanding is that marriage intentions had to be filed in both the > town of residence of the bride and of the groom (if different). The marriage > could occur in either of these towns,or in yet a 3rd town. ________________ I have dealt with hundreds of marriages & intentions in the 1700's in New England while doing research for my next book and during this time, if a couple resided in different towns, marriage intentions were almost always filed in the groom's hometown, with the marriage ocurring in the bride's hometown. Sometimes the marriage ocurred in his hometown, or with intentions filed in both towns - but these were the exceptions and filing intentions in both towns was in no way mandatory. And, quite often only intentions can be found, the marriage record has either disappeared, or for some unknown reason, has been recorded in a third town we haven't thought of looking into. S.Roser

    1. Re: [MEWASHIN-L] Marriage Intention Question
    2. Patricia McCurdy Townsend
    3. Hello all, Filing intentions of marriage was a way of alerting the public that an intended marriage was to take place. If the bride and groom lived in different towns they filed their intentions in both towns. That way, if for instance, one or the other had an impediment to the marriage anyone could come forward with information as to why the marriage should not take place. After filing intentions and no protest being made after 3 days (in Maine) the couple could then get their license to marry. Usually the license was good for one year and the couple could be married anywhere they wanted to (in the state of Maine) - not necessarily in either's filing town. Hope this helps to clarify the situation. Pat Patricia McCurdy Townsend http://members.tripod.com/~quoddybelle/index.html
