Hi Everyone, You may experience problems with the Boards and others parts of the site. Here's the explanation We appreciate your patience in the following areas: WORLDCONNECT PROJECT: WorldConnect is being moved to new, faster servers. You may experience periodic down times or delays during the transition, and some functions will be temporarily disabled. GEDCOM uploading and the ability to add Post-em Notes were suspended on Monday; global searches will be suspended on Tuesday. We anticipate all functions will return to normal within a week. ACCESS PROBLEMS: Some users may not be able to reach our message boards or the Ancestry.com site. The problem has been resolved, but it may take a couple of days until the changes have propagated to all service providers. SSDI INDEX: The Social Security Death Index has not been updated, due to delays in our receiving the updated files. Marilyn Strout
Hello. I live in Machias not too far from Lubec and Eastport and visit Lubec quite frequently since we enjoy driving through that area as well as visiting West Quoddy State Park. We've only lived in Maine for a little under 5 years, but I have noticed that Lubec has been desperately trying to clean up their little town these past few years. A new B & B has been erected, a new library is in the process of being built, the old sardine factory has new roofs on all of its buildings right across from the new B & B. I guess you would have to visit an area often to notice these minor improvements to get the overall picture of a small town trying to pull itself up out of an economic depression. Eastport on the other hand is going great guns with its deep water harbor which brings in large ships from all over the world and in general is like a phoenix rising out of the ashes! There also is a ferry that is run during the summer months to connect Eastport with islands in New Brunswick. Eastport also has many beautiful old homes, some of which have been converted into B & Bs. Someone just passing through naturally would take away a totally different perspective of these small towns, not realizing the progress that has been made in recent years. Quite a few tourists frequent Eastport on an annual basis and make it there home port while visiting the surrounding areas of Maine and New Brunswick. All in all the little coastal towns of Washington County are working hard at trying to establish themselves and to boost their economy!! Donna from Machias
Hello again, It appears that I have been somewhat misunderstood. I was asking for other people's opinions .... on the Towns of Lubec and Eastport. As I was explaining to someone who responded, my sister and I are one year apart and look like twins, but that doesn't mean we think alike. If I ever get a chance to travel again, one of the first trips I would plan would be a trip to Washington County. I wouldn't mind spending an entire summer there! And, of course, I would make side trips to both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia ... where other ancestors lived. But, the first town I would visit would be Princeton. I understand that Kidder families were living there from the early 1800's up until the late 1900's. But, I also know those Kidder families also spread out in different directions .... some only to other counties in Maine, one man went to Hawaii .. and stayed there. My great-grandfather moved to MA for about 15 years, and then .. left his wife and children there .. and went .. back to Princeton. Also, both my sister and someone who just wrote to me mentioned the movie that was filmed in Eastport a few years ago. My sister thought it was titled, "Murder in Small Town," or something. I think I'll try to find that movie in the local video store. Have a good day, Betty
Good morning, One of my sisters just came back from a driving trip with a friend ... up the Maine coast! It was a pleasure trip, with a little genealogy thrown in for good measure! When they arrived in Eastport and Lubec, they were shocked. Last night she described Eastport as "a dying town," but still neat and clean. But, she described Lubec as "a ghost town," and, in addition, dirty and unkempt. I remember just a few years ago seeing Internet Advertising stating that Lubec was ... the place to go ... in order to be the first one to see the sunrise on the first day of "the new millenium." What happened? Genealogy? My great-grandmother, Louise Wellington RICE, and her sister, Edith RICE, grew up in Arlington, MA. The maiden name of their mother was Adelaide Crosby HUTCHINSON of both the CROSBY and Hutchinson families of Arlington, MA. Somehow Adelaide had married Charles Wellington RICE of Lubec, ME. His parents were Daniel and Lucy (McDonald) RICE of Lubec. Edith RICE never married, and was a children's Librarian in Arlington, MA. Because of the Internet, I accidentally found out that a large, expensive collection of children's books was recently donated to ... the University of Maine! Louise RICE probably met George "Sanford" KIDDER in either Eastport or Lubec while she was visiting her grandparents. "Sanford" was born in Princeton, ME, in 1870, and came from a large Kidder family in Princeton (and Calais). "Sanford" and Louise married in Princeton, but came back to Arlington, MA, to live. They had three children. (Sanford's great-grandfather lived in St. Stephen, NB, from 1785 to 1799.) Have a good day, Betty (near Lowell, MA)
Thanks for sharing this note. I haven't been able to get in in any way for s few days. Just yesterday, I was able to get back into ancestry.com. So hopefully it is resolved for all. Hi everyone, I too have been unable to get to the boards at ancestry.com. Hi Laura: In answer to your second question, I can't log onto Ancestry.com either. I think I noticed a problem yesterday also, but thought it was just my computer at that time. I entered "ancestry" into a multi-search engine and clicked on the first result, which was Ancestry.com, but got a message saying that site was not available. Hope this helps. Good luck with your searching. Regards, Bruce.

Does anyone have info on the ancestors of the John Nelson ANTHONY who married Thelma Ermina FLETCHER (1906-?) on 7 May 1921 in Lubec? Thelma was born in Lubec. Thanks for any help. Otis Anthony
Looking for any information on the marriage of Myrtle Byers, possibly from Eastport or Lubec to my father, Alexander Cox, during the late 1920's and early 1930's. Willing to share info.

Hi Everyone, Apologies for multiple posts. If anyone has written to me in the past week, please accept my apologies for the delay in answering. I'm in the process of moving back home from camp and getting the kids settled back in the school routine. My car only holds so much and half of my research material hasn't gotten here yet as the Outback only holds so much. (kids, cats, guinea pigs, dogs, driver, etc.) I should be back on track by Monday Sept 10th! Marilyn Maxwell Strout Charlotte Co. GenWeb
I have a couple of Bailey problems I need help with. The first is my 2G-grandmother, Nettie Bailey, b. 24 Sep 1869 in Princeton, d. 15 May 1918 in Princeton. On her death certificate, her parents are listed as Abner Bailey, b. Baileyville, and Althea Mary Craft, b. St. John, NB. Does anyone have any information on Abner? Is he a descendant of the Baileyville founder, Nathaniel? The second is Thomas Bailey, who married my 3G-Aunt Catharine Ripley in Waite about 1834. They had at least two children: Joel B. and Mary Ellen. Catharine d. 5 May 1846 in Waite and Thomas married 2nd Philenda Ann Larkin. Their granddaughter, Annie B. Bailey, married my great uncle, Charles Benjamin James. I suspect Thomas is a son of Isaac Titcomb Bailey, but do not know for sure. How does Thomas fits into the Bailey/Bayley clan of Baileyville? Karen Herrick of the Calais Free Library looked up this story on the Shaw Bros. tannery fire of May 11,1887, and I thought the list might enjoy reading it, too: >From the Calais Advertiser, Wednesday, May 18, 1887: Fire Record A most destructive fire occurred at Grand Lake Stream on Wednesday last. It broke out in the engine house of the Shaw Bros. tannery, and destoyed the engine house, saw mill, dry house, roll loft, and the immense building that covered the tan vats, or yard, also ten thousand sides of leather, valued at $30,000. A strong northerly wind was blowing at the time, and no efforts to stay its progress availed. The loss is estimated at from $100,000 to $125,000. Insured for about $100,000, which has been adjusted satisfactorily to all concerned. The buildings will be rebuilt at once and business go right on as usual. The saddest thing that happened was the loss of one Edward White, one of the employees, who was burned to death while assisting in getting out a lot of hides. He got surrounded by the flames and could not get away and no one could get to him, and so perished. He leaves a widow and eight children, the oldest of which is a girl aged 17 years, and the youngest a child aged 16 months. So intense was the heat where he fell that five or six silver dollars and some coppers he had in his pocket melted and run together. A fire at Princeton the same day destroyed a store and house belonging to James Fenlason, with outbuildings; loss about $900; partially insured; the house and contents of Henry Fitch, loss $500; insurance $225; Baptist parsonage furniture; loss $300; not insured. Also three small buildings valued at $500. David Mitchell James 420 Central Rd Rye, NH 03870-2546 603 964-5472 jamesdm49@aol.com

Hello everyone, Due to a major computer crash recently, I lost many queries that had been sent to me to be included in my genealogy column that runs weekly in the Maine Sunday Telegram. If any of you did send me queries that you wanted to be included in my column, just to be sure that they get in, it would be best if you sent them to me again. Hopefully, I will get all those that were lost and eventually get them into my column. Thank you, Erlene Davis Erlene Huntress Davis, Genealogy Columnist, Maine Sunday Telegram
HI... I started a new job July 16th. As I stated with my July update the August one would be subject to change. I am now away from my home 12 hours a day 4 days a week. I have decided to take the August update "off" and am getting use to these new longer hours and spend my off days with my children who are having a hard time adjusting to the fact Mom is not home much these days. (By the time I get home they are sleeping.) September update will be back on schedule. By then I will be able to spend my days off working on the site while the kids are at school and and my husband is at work. On August 10th I received a "donation" in the mail for the site. This generous donation consisted of 2 packages of recently developed film taken of older stones at the Wilson's Beach and St. Anne's Cemeteries. I will start to post these with the next update. Most of the photo's contains information which will be NEW to the site. I would LOVE to have more photo's of the cemeteries to place on the pages. If you have ANY pictures of ANY stones from the Campobello Cemeteries would you consider, allowing me to place it on the site?? I am hoping by starting to get pictures of the stones I will be able to get a "more accurate" cemetery transcription other than those that I have on the site from the early 1900's. If you can help, please contact me . Thanks!!!
