Hanson, Native of Palmyra, Veteran of the Civil War -- Died in Oregon The death of Phineas T. Hanson, a native of Palmyra, occurred in St. Johns', Oregon, April 30th. A local paper has the following: Phineas T. Hanson, one of St. John's pioneers, was laid at rest in Columbia cemetery, his comrades of the Grand Army of the Republic and Women's Relief Corps performing the last sad, solemn, patriotic rites, following Christian Science services. Born of Revolutionary stock in Palmyra, Maine, a few days more than seventy-seven years ago, his life has been a full one. In 1861, at President Lincoln's call, he volunteered and served with distinction in the 9th Maine Volunteers. His enlistment period up, he re-enlisted on the battle field and helped finish the job. Returning to the native state, he married Miss Adele Johonot and made a home near East Corinth, but Oregon called and thirty-seven years ago he moved with his family to St. Johns and helped build up this important adjunct to Portland's prosperity. His was a well known figure here. He was active in all civic affairs. His unfailing courtesy and kindness made him a host of friends here and in Maine. These mourn his depar! ture and tender respectful regret to his widow, daughter, grandchildren and relatives." Mr. Hanson leaves, besides his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Mabelle Gordon, of Portland, Oregon and a grandson, James Gordon, born in Butte, Mont. There are also five grandchildren, born to a daughter, Blanche Louise Marey, now deceased. Mrs. Hanson had four brothers widely scattered, Lewis Johonnot, a sugar planter in Hawaii; Rev. Rodney F. Johonnot of Bellows Falls, VT.; Nelson Johonnot of Corinna, Maine and Fred Johonnot of Los Angeles, Cal. Bangor Daily News, Bangor, Maine, 21 May 1919, Wednesday, p. 2.
