The "W Vien Riv" listing which appears in many indexes of the 1850 census of Somerset County is the result of a misreading. The actual listing should be "W. Ken. Riv." The census marshal made his "K" as two very separate marks, so that it appears to the later transcriptionist as "V i" The township in question is now known as Highland Plantation, but in 1850 was known by its survey location, "Township 2, Range 2, West of the Kennebec River."
