This email lists names we know or believe came to Australia. We have not yet fully investigated many of them, and others we have not even started. A large number of the names I have listed in my emails, arrived on ONE SHIP. It has been noted in letters and diaries that up to half of the 210 passengers were from Maine (majority Somerset Co). As you can see we don't yet have 100 names listed. We do have the shipping list with all names - it is a matter of sorting them out one day. If you know anyone who came here, please ask and we will tell you IF they are on our 'unfinished' list or on that particular ship. Again communication is welcome. Possible - Benjamin F. Allen - possibly brother to Daniel Allen a definite who came and died in Australia William Churchill and Francis Teague as per my first email. Ephraim Dinsmore Horace Eaton Asher Fletcher Willard Fletcher William Gould N. Johnson John K Morrison Cyrus Kimball ? Potter J Spaulding Stephen Greenleaf THOMPSON Regards Denise in Australia.
As promised to so many wonderful people who answered my last post to Somerset County list, I will start with the names (from Somerset Co). This research has taken upwards of 3 years to do, and whilst my co-researcher and I are about ready to publish Part I, we do have many more names we have not yet researched, so therefore have not investigated their origins. They will come in time, but meanwhile, I list now some names. I may do this in two or three posts - if you find anything which means something to you, we would welcome communication with you. The following are names we have quite a bit of information on, particularly in Australia. Over 20 of these men did not return to the USA. Daniel ALLEN, son of Francis Allen Frank ALLEN son of Harper and Jane Freeman ALLEN, son of Harper and Jane, Samuel Augustus BICKFORD son of Rev Sam and Sarah Bickford Joshua BIGELOW son of Joshua and Eliza Joseph BIGELOW Leander BIGELOW son of George and Martha Charles BIGELOW son of Joshua and Eliza John Varnum BRADLEY and his wife Augusta Ann Augustus Reuben BRAINERD son of Reuben and Amelia Simeon Cragin CLEVELAND son of Ben and Lydia William Parker CLEVELAND son of James and Elizabeth Ebenezer HILL son of Hannah and Amos Daniel WAUGH son of Daniel and Anna Joseph S DILLINGHAM son of Horatio and Mary Ann Oliver CUTTS son of George and Anna Cyrus HUTCHINS son of James and Cynthia John Roscoe KINSMORE son of Jacob and Anna Abe LONGFELLOW son of Nathan and Mary Henry Baker NEIL son of Eben and Mary Samuel NOWELL son of William and Dolly Bartlett NYE son of Bartlett Hiram NYE son of Bartlett Henry PAGE son of John and Fanny Augustus PAGE son of John and Fanny William Henry PEARSON, son of Ed and Hannah Henry POLLARD son of Sam and Mary Edward Payson POLLARD son of Sam and Mary Leonard RICHARDSON son of Silas and Fannie Shepherd SMILEY son of Hugh and Polly Benjamin SNOW son of Daniel and Abigail Charles H. Dawn, if it is not too much trouble, could you check to see if there are any KINCAIDs mentioned in Gladys Bigelow's book? Thanks in advance Richard Kincaid "kincaidsofmaine"
Greetings, "Gladys Bigelow's A HISTORY OF ST ALBANS" has three MAXWELLS listed in the index. Three are marriage intentions. Page 334.....JAMES E BIGELOW of St Albans intention to marry ELLA (ELSA?) MAXWELL posted 22 November 1875. If this MAXWELL is yours I have a question concerning her:-) please! Page 301.....THOMAS L. MAXWELL of Canaan intention to marry MERIBAH D. BAILEY 12 July 1857 Page 296.....WILLIAM MAXWELL of St Albans intentions to marry MARY B. LOTHROP of St Albans, 29 September 1852. On page 188 it states: MARY D. LOTHROP b. September 22,1829 married MAXWELL; moved to Neenah, Wisconsin. MARY D. LOTHROPS mother was a BIGELOW and my records show that JAMES EDWARD BIGELOW and ELSA MAXWELL BIGELOW were married and moved west. I think west was Wisconsin with MARY D and her husband. I suspect ELSA or ELLA MAXWELL later married a man named CLASS? I hope this information helps you. I also hope you can shed some light on my puzzle. Good morning from Australia. With a friend, I'm researching the lives of Americans who came to the northeast of Victoria, Australia during our gold rush years of 1851+. We have been aware for a couple of years now that a few dozen men from Somerset County arrived in that district, and we have completed the research on many of them. We have found day to day accounts of their lives through diaries, newspapers, and descendants. I will list these names in another email, in the hope that someone on this list, is interested in them. Meanwhile, I'm looking for a couple of men who came here to Australia (we are yet to find if they arrived in the northeast) and we are finding it difficult. One is Francis TEAGUE who we are told left USA for Australia in 1851-1852 and died here. (from Louise Coburn's book on Somerset Co) Whilst there are many deaths for Francis Teague (Tighe) in Australia we have not been able to confirm to date that any of them were from Somerset Co. The cost of buying all those death certificates is out of our reach. I also have that Francis TEAGUE died and was buried in North Cem Skowhegan in 1895 and the age has him born around 1826, much the same age as most of the men who came. Whether this is one and the same Francis or a son of the Francis who came here, I don't know. ------ The other is William CHURCHILL born 1803 married twice, once to Nancy Walker and another to Asenath S Newell. He was still home in USA in 1850 at Census time, and possibly if our information is correct, home in 1851 (wife had a child in 1852). William also came to Australia, went gold mining, wrote home that he had found his gold and was making his way home. He apparently never left Australia, having been murdered for his gold. (from letter and newspaper account) He left several children behind in Somerset County, so we live in hope someone knows this family. ----- Thanks for reading, I will come back and list our names from Somerset County, you just never know. Regards Denise
I live in Australia and I am researching the family of James & Betsy(Parker) Cleveland from Skowhegan. James was the son of Joseph and Susannah (Steward) Cleveland. Particularly interested in contacting descendants of any of James' children. Thanks, Margaret
I went to Canaan about 3 years ago and the town clerk had a vital records book. They were very helpful. I would suggest you call Canaan Town Clerk RR 2, Canaan, ME 04924 (207) 474-8682 Richard A Kincaid kincaidsofmaine

I came across a stone of Richard Hayden from the Revolutionary War in an obscure Cemetery in Madison, Maine. I have a picture of it. It says: Sergt. Rich'd Hayden Mass.Mil. Surnames: Calrk, Goodale, Varain, Marquez Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/UEB.2ACE/526 Message Board Post: Joseph GOODALE and Martha (Clark?) moved from Maine to California. The 1870 census has them with their 3 children: Charles E born about 1857 in Maine, Cora Vesta born about 1864 in Merced Co, CA and son John C. (probabaly for John Clark who I think is Martha's father) born 1869 in CA. I suspect Martha is a Clark because in 1860 Martha and Joseph F. Goodale are living in Merced Co, CA without their 3 year old son and on the 1860 Ripley, Somerset Co, ME census we see John Clark born abt 1776, probably his wife Martha born about 1794 and their children Sarah age 34, Asa age 24, John age 24 (they seem to be twins) Hannah age 18, Alice age 39 and Charles E. Goodale age 3! There is also a Lenore Gidden age 10 who may be another grandchild. The CLARKS were previously on 1850 census listed in Jefferson, Lincoln Co, Maine. Any information appreciated. Charles E. Goodale wed into my husband's VARAIN lineage when he wed Honorina "Honor" VARAIN, daughter of Charles Dana Varain and Maria MARQUEZ
