Saw some interesting research in Norridgewock, on PRESCOTT not SMART but was wondering if you can tell me where you found all the information. My John SMART bought land in 1808 in St. Albans but lost it by 1830 where he ends up in Norridgewock. He is either sick or poor and the family seems to be scattered. I have not been able to find anything more on him. Most of the family moved to Brighton by 1850. In 1832 Norridgewock Town Orders say not to sell Loemma SMART (wife of John) and strong spirits since she has a problem with it. It seems to run in this line. I would really like to find some additional information on John & Loemma SMART as well as any and all of their children. Their son Sylvester Smart is my direct line. There is a mention of a John SMART that married Betsey TUTTLE in Brighton and had 2 children but I can not find if it's the same John Smart or something or someone I am missing. I would appreciate any help on these name. Thanks for reading this. Sandy Carneiro

His father’s name was also Ellis Blackwell, and his mother’s name, before marriage, was Jedidah Sturtevant. Her father, Lott Sturtevant, was from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and was a soldier in the revolutionary war. After the revolution was over he emigrated to Maine, and settled in the heavy timber in the vicinity of Waterville, when that part of the country was unsettled. The subject of this sketch was born in Somerset county, Maine, on the 20th of July, 1829. Remaining at home till he was twenty-two years of age he then (in the year 1851) emigrated to Illinois, and settled in Henry county. He was at that time without capital, and on reaching Illinois he only had ten dollars in his possession, which sum was soon expended in purchasing necessaries. He worked on a farm at twelve dollars per month, saved his money, and with it purchased land warrants with which he entered 240 acres of land. After improving forty acres he sold his tract, and bought another 240 acres, all of which he improved, put up good buildings, and lived there till 1867. December 23, 1858, he married Maria E. Gibbs, born in the state of New York. In 1867 he emigrated to Jasper county, Missouri, and bought for cash 1100 acres of land in one body in Madison township. Of this he has disposed of all but 480 acres, 440 of which are embraced in his home farm, four miles northeast of Carthage. He has been quite largely engaged in farming and stock raising. A view of his farm and residence appears elsewhere. In politics he is a republican. Up to 1860 he took but little interest in politics but that year voted for Lincoln, and has ever since supported the principles of the republican party.

Re: Robinson According to the East Somerset County Register, 1911-12, Jonathan Robinson came to Harmony, ME (Somerset Co) somewhere between 1790 and 1803, when the town was incorporated. The first male child born in the town was Noah Robinson. Doesn't give years, but it might be a lead for you. Jonathan Robinson was a selectman for the town between 1805-1832 although not every year. OTHER Surnames and Areas Connected to PENLEY's include: from Kevin KING: lists at kdking dot com Hello, Let me add one thing to Janice's comments. Joseph Penley had 16 children, and I believe over 100 grandchildren. His eldest son, John, had 18 children of his own. Most of these 2nd and 3rd generation PENLEYs stayed in the Danville, now Auburn, area in Maine. And with that many of them in the 1800s in a town the size of Danville, if you can trace your roots to Danville back into the 1800s there is a VERY good chance there are Penleys mixed in there that you may have not found yet. Some, off the top of my head, families that married Penleys on a frequent basis are: DINGLEY, JORDAN, WAGG, GARCELON, -- and many more - that is just what I can remember. And as Janice said in another list: "There are some others, too, that are found among the descendants, some of whom spread west to the Minot, Noway / S Paris, Bethel areas and north into the Fayette, Jay, Livermore, Turner, Wilton, etc areas. They include: ACKLEY / AKELEY, CROCKETT, DAKIN, DAVIS, DYER, HACKETT, HAINES, HODGKIN, MARSHALL, MITCHELL, PACKARD, RANDALL, VICKERY, WATERHOUSE." So if you have Danville/Auburn ancestors in the 1800s and have hit a brick wall, then toss out some names - we have a large database of Penleys and related families and might just have what you are looking for... -Kevin Cousins, we are trying our best to find you. See my original post of 6-22-2005. THANKS, Kevin. Janice
