My grandmother's parents were William Merritt and Adelaide Fuller. He had lived until 1984, when he was 97 years old. Social Security Death Index confirmed the lifespan, and provided his date of birth (24 May 1887). My grandmother was born in Plaistow NH in 1923, so I looked in Plaistow's 1920 census images on Ancestry.com, and found William and his family there, as follows: Merritt, William O., (head) age looks like 30, but should read 32 or 33. Merritt, Adelaide C, (wife) age 27 Merritt, Ralph M., (son) age 7 Merritt, George W., (son) age 5 Merritt, Alfred S., (son) age 3yrs 5 months Merritt, Frank E., (son) age 6 months Place of birth for the last two boys is New Hampshire, the rest Mass. My mother confirmed that these were the names of her uncles. Knowing that William was born in Massachusetts, supposedly Newburyport, I looked there in 1900, but did not find him. Looking in the surrounding towns, I finally found his family in West Newbury, MA, as follows: Merritt, James W. born Apr 1851 in MA, parents Canada (Eng) Merritt, Sarah E. (wife), born MA, parents MA Robinson (blurry), Harry F. (stepson) born MA, parents ME/MA Merritt, Walter E. (son) born Jun 1885 Merritt, William O. (son) born May 1887 Merritt, Gertrude M. (daughter) born Mar 1890 Merritt, Jennie E. (daughter) born Feb 1892 Merritt, Frank E. (son) born Jul 1985 Merritt, Warren W. (son) born Oct 1897 Merritt, George E. (son) born Oct 1899 Imagine my surprise today when I went back to the Plaistow 1920 census and found that Sarah, Frank and George were also living in Plaistow in 1920 (and I had thought at first they were unrelated), renting from an Alice C. Glover, and (on the census at least) just one house away from great-great-grandparents from my father's line (Albert M and Bessie W Tozier). I have not found the Merritt family in a 1910 census yet - they're neither in Plaistow nor West Newbury in that year. And I haven't som far found James Merritt in 1880, either. But I'm hoping that folks on this list could help with: 1) Maiden Name/Parents for Sarah 2) Details of Sarah's first marriage 3) Parents for James/Birth info 4) Date of death for Sarah, James 5) Whether there is a familial relationship to Alice Glover.
