I am trying to trace my Merritt ancestors. Following is what I have. If I am wrong please let me know so I can correct: Abraham Merritt, Jr, b. about 1732 in Springfield Twp., Burlington Co., NJ, died 10 Mar 1766. Believe his parents were Abraham, Sr., and Sarah Merritt. He married Rachel Gaskill 28 Sep 1757. Rachel Gakill was the daughter of Jonathan and Jane Shinn Gaskill. She was born 18 Nov 1739 in Springfield Twp., Burlington Co., NJ, died 27 Feb 1812. Their children were Abraham, Ann, Caleb, Levi, Charity. Caleb Merritt, son of Abraham and Rachel Gaskill Merritt was born 08 March 1760, Burlington County, NJ, died Jan 1832 in Alexander Twp., Athens County, OH. He married Mary Bennett 15 Nov 1777. She was born ca 1753 in Fayette Co., PA. died about 1790 in Fayette Co., PA. Her parents were John and Mary Kendall Bennett. Their children were John, Unity and Elizabeth Ann. Elizabeth Ann Merritt , daughter of Caleb and Mary Bennett Merritt, b. 1787 PA, d. bef. 1856 in OH She married before 1808 to John Wood, son of Joshua and Mary Botts Wood. Their children were William, Delilah, Caleb, Mary, Unity, Elizabeth and Joshua J. I would like to trace my ancestors back from Abraham Merritt, Jr. Any help at all will be appreciated. Margaret
Ken, based on my own experience with Douglas Merritt, I'd say he probably got it right. I'm sure the place existed: Here's a 1794 genealogical reference to "Boston Four Corners, Dutchess Co., NY" members.nbci.com/eggy77/WC02/WC02_073.htm If I were searching old maps for such a town, I'd look very close to Poughkeepsie or perhpas a bit further north near a village called Tivoli. There's also a chance it could be on the extreme eastern side of the county, near Kent and Sharon, CT. In case you're not familiar w Dutchess County, it lies between the Hudson River on the western boundary and the State of Connecticut on the eastern boundary. To the south lies Putnam County, NY and a bit further south, Westchester County, NY. Good luck, Mark Merritt Researching Kent County, MD families, including: Merritt, Miller, Beck, Wickes, VanSant, Davis, Burgan and allied lines Ken Jackson wrote: > I guess that I don't know any more than I found in the reference (Revised > Merritt Records by Douglas Merritt). I'm afraid you'll need some more information to pin it down precisely. Any map of Dutchess (and surrounding counties) will show you that the name "corners" is part of many, many, many hamlets. There are several "Four Corners". The term is found in business names, roads, etc. I don't know of any one particular spot that is the big daddy of all the four corners in Dutchess. Try typing, with the quoation marks (to ensure they come together) ["Four Corners" Dutchess] into google.com and you'll get an idea of what I'm talking about. Don't include the brackets. Hi....does anyone on the list have knowledge of a place called "four-corners" in Dutchess County? My ancestor, Ebenezer Merritt, originally lived in "Northeast", moved to Yates County with his son, John Merritt, returned to Duchess County (Four-Corners), where he died in the early 1850's. Thanks Ken Jackson

Bill: Do you have any Merritt from Huntingdon Pa. in the middle 1800's? I have a gg grandmother Elizabeth Merritt who married Andrew Thomas Fridley on 4-12-1839 in Huntingdon. They had 7 children and the parents and two children died of Cholera around St. Louis in 1851. According to a family letter in 1928 there was a sizeable estate from a Merritt in Huntingdon around that time. I have over 400 descendants with the name Merritt, Merriot, Merrett and similar spellings all migrating from Rhode Island west. The name was originally Marryott, but many were using the name Merritt by 1850. I have found in my reseach that all searching requires looking for three consonants with any vowels. M ...R...T.. This means your Merritt relatives may have used the names Maret, Meret, Merit, Merritt, Meriot, Mariot, and many, many more. I read each and every post looking for connections and rarely find anyone who connects to my Merritt lines. The major states in the 19th century for my relatives were New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Connecticut, also surrounding other states and on West as far as Washington. > Bill Maryott > >

Hello list, I believe I have found enough information to make a pretty good assumption of my Merritt family tree. I want to share it here just in case it can help anyone now or in the future. Hezekiah Merritt, Sr. born between 1700 and 1755 had child: Hezekiah, Jr. born between 1755 and 1775 (probably NC) had child: (or was sibling of:) James born between 1785 and 1795 in NC had child: John born between 1810 and 1820 in NC.* *John Merritt married Miranda Murphy** in Jones County, NC between 1835 and 1840. They had children: Caroline, Sarah, Elizabeth, John and George. They moved to Pike County, Alabama and began acquiring land there in 1850. They appeared on the Pike County, AL census in 1860. He appears as John A. Marratt, age 46, born in NC. **Miranda Murphy was born around 1825. Her parents were Thomas and Mary (Clark) Murphy. Miranda's brother was William Clark Murphy. William C. Murphy is living next door to John and Miranda Merritt on the 1840 Jones County, NC census. William C. Murphy is also living near them in Pike County, AL in 1860. He is on the 1860 Pike County, AL census at age 45, born in NC. He was granted land there in 1858 in the same township as John Merritt. That is a brief summary of my assumption. Below are some recent facts I found to put this together. There are more facts (and random details I've gathered) that I have not listed here including neighbors found for both families through the father and son generations such as "McDaniel" and "Ward." Also, LDS has a James Merritt as father of John but without details. Also, LDS has a Miranda Murphy as being the daughter of Thomas and Mary Murphy in Jones County, North Carolina. Also, there are Jones County estate records online listing these families with will/death? dates. Please share/post, on this list, if you can to build a more solid tree. Thanks.
