Hi from Australia. I am looking for information on Thomas MERRITT born abt 1804, he married Elizabeth Black born abt 1819 and they married 1838, Glasgow, Scotland. He belonged to the 96th Regiment of Foot (payroll no 894) and they came to Tasmania for several years then onto the goldfields at Ballarat, Victoria. They came to Tasmania on the ship Tortoise arriving 19 Feb 1842. It was a convict ship and I gather he was a soldier on it. His family travelled with him, of 16 children 9 survived, Catherine , Thomas, Susanna, Robert, Roderick, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Jemima and Annie ......hoping someone can help.....Judy Victoria.

Hi List; Gosh, you guys are doing better than I am. My grandfather was James William Merritt, b. August 17, 1876, Olender or Oleander, Alabama, d. August 23, 1943. He was married to Ruby Belle Burroughs Merritt, b. June 13, 1889, Plattsburg, Mississippi, d. January 12, 1927. After much runaround and many letters I finally got my grandfather's death certificate last fall and found his parents to be simply listed as John Merritt and Emely Black Merritt. How many John Merritts do you think there were in Alabama during this period.......a BUNCH!!! From there I am clueless. I am trying to trace back and have yet to get any info on either John or Emely. We also visited my Dad's Uncle Eke when I was a kid and since he was never at the Burroughs (my paternal grandmother's family) reunions I can only assume he was my grandfather James Merritt's brother. Of course, I am sure that Eke was a nickname and can find no evidence of any Merritt that lived in the area at the time that might match an Eke. No family alive to give me a clue! If any of this rings a bell with anyone or you need more info.....like the children of James and Ruby Belle I will be happy to furnish any info I can. There comes a point where the search just gets frustrating and I am to that point! :-) Warm regards from East Texas; Nancy Merritt
My 6th gr. grandfather was Abraham Merritt b:1732/1735 Springfield Twp., Burlington Co., NJ, d: 1766, married Rachel Gaskill, b: 18 Nov 1739 Springfield Twp., Burlington Co., NJ. Her parents were Jonathan Gaskill and Jane Shinn. His parents, I have been told but do not have proof, were Abraham Merriot/Merritt and Sarah ? Their children were: (1) Abraham b: 1757/58, d: ?, married Garthory Brooks on 02 Dec 1785 (2) Ann b: ca 1759, d: ?, married Curtis Shinn 15 Nov 1797, (3) Caleb b: 08 Mar 1760, d: ?, married (1) Mary Bennett on 15 Nov 1777 (2) Mary Garwood on 07 May 1797 (4) Levi b: ?, d: ?, married Elizabeth Scott, (5) Charity b: ?, d: ?, married Levi Gaskill. Caleb Merritt and Mary Bennett were my 5th gr grandparents. Caleb was b: 08 Mar 1760 in Burlington Co., NJ, d: Jan 1832 in Alexander Twp., Athens County, OH, married Mary Bennett on 15 Nov. 1777, b: ca 1753 (?) Fayette Co., PA, d: ca 1790 in Fayette Co., PA. Her parents were John Bennett and Mary Kendall. His parents were Abraham Merritt and Rachel Gaskill. Children were: (1) John b: 1780, d: ?, (2) Unity b: 16 Jan 1784, d: 22 May 1826 in Meigs County, OH, married Thomas Sharp on 24 Mar 1801 (3) Elizabeth Ann b: 1787, d: before 1856, married John Wood. (Elizabeth Ann Merritt and John Wood were my 4th gr grandparents). I believe there were two other children as there were 5 children listed on the 1790 census, both daughters. Any help on this family will sure be appreciated. Margaret
Greetings AGAIN to everyone on the List: To get this list moving let's put a few of our Merritt dead end/brick walls on this message board and see if anything connects with another Merritt reader. Here is an item of interest to me that I have fruitlessly tried tracking down for about six months. Who was the father of Bert U. Merritt of Minn.? Although Ora J. Bragg and Bert Merritt seem to be frequently listed in their databases, I have not yet reliably determined Bert's parents. I believe possibly Cassius Clay Merritt but I don't know. Here is why I have on Bert: Bert U. Merritt was born about1883, and died May 9, 1964 in Virginia, St. Louis County, Minnesota. He married Ora Jeanette Bragg 1900, daughter of Barnabus Bragg and Mary Cornman. Ora was born December 20, 1883 in Lost Creek, Pierce County, Wisconsin, and died March 2, 1956 in Mountain Iron, St. Louis County, Minnesota. Children of Bert Merritt and Ora Bragg were: 2 i. Clinton Herbert Merritt, born January 18, 1905; died April 18, 1979 in Hibbing, St. Louis County, Minnesota. More About Clinton Merritt: Residence: Pengilly, Itasca County, Minnesota 3 ii. Truman Merritt, born November 19, 1906 in Minnesota. 4 iii. Clyde Merritt, born 1908. 5 iv. Genevieve Merritt, born 1913. 6 v. Inez Merritt, born October 8, 1902. 7 vi. LiAnna Merritt. 8 vii. Ora Merritt. 9 viii. Florence Belle Merritt, born July 24, 1919. Regards, Ron Merritt Yanbu, Saudi Arabia
Greetings to everyone on the List: Something I have been trying to figure out for a long time is--who were the parents of Second Lt. Thomas J. Merritt, died Oct 11, 1944 in Europe? He entered the Army from St. Louis County and was a member of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regt. at the time of death. Thomas J. Merritt is listed on the WWII Veterans Roll of Honor in Duluth, Minn. Not listed on the Roll of Honor is the fact that he is buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, Holland. Although I believe that I have pretty decent records on early day Merritt family members from the Duluth, St. Louis County area, I have been able to determine who was the father of Thomas J. Merritt. Regards, Ron Merritt Yanbu, Saudi Arabia

The line I am researching includes: William Merritt, born 1792 in NC died GA, m Edna Vason Edward Clinch Merritt b 1824 in GA d 1891 Bibb County GA, m Nancy Samantha Jones & Martha Ann Jones who were sisters. Edward's children include Samuel, Thomas, Robert (my grandfather), Annie, Mary, Lillie and George. George was born in 1880 and married Grace. Their children were George and Marjorie. I would like to correspond with descendants of George. (Or any other researchers of this line.) Thanks, Nancy Douglass
I have to completely agree with Ron here. If there is a problem I don't see it. First, this newsgroup is perhaps one of the slower groups to which I subscribe, so there is little room for argument that too much information is posted on the group. Second, the more names I see, the more I'm likely I am to find a name to which I can connect. If there is something I'm missing, some reason why we should limit the number of names we post, I hope someone will let me know. Otherwise, I'll continue to enjoy reading the lists of names and dates that people have found and continue to search them for some common ancestor. I am hoping that someone on the Merritt list might have the Doel/Merritt connection that I am eager to find. I am researching my gggrandmother's (Charlotte Doel) family. I had hit a dead end when I was given a blip from the Kingsville, Ashtabula Co. Ohio area about Philip Doel who was my gggrandmother's brother. The information states that Mesdames Merritt attended the 80th birthday of her uncle Philip Doel of Geneva, Ohio on July 19, 1898. Philip immigrated from Bere Regis, Dorset, England to Quebec, Canada and then in 1838 to Ashtabula Co. Ohio. If anyone can connect the Doel and Merritt families, I would greatly appreciate your sharing what information that you have. Thank you, Jim Taylor of Warren, Ohio

Hi June, After reading "an apology" I went back to see what I had missed. I do not know who told you that you included too many names. I can not see where you have. And at 70 (in Aug.) I can be pretty picky! Maybe the person who said that meant "they" had a problem and that does not mean everyone would. I have seen many more names included than what you have here. Do not see a problem for me. Just wish I could help find some of them!
