    1. CUMMINGS, THOMAS E. Fredonia, IN 5/28/1853 to Iowa m.ANNA MERRITT
    2. I am not related to nor have any further information on this family. I am posting this through the courtesy of the Decatur, IA mailing list. It is posted with the hopes it may be placed in the proper archives for future reference and may help someone at this time in finding their families. Decatur County Journal Iowa Thursday, September 20, l9l7 THOMAS E. CUMMINGS was born in Fredonia, Ind., May 28, l853 and passed away at Davis City, Iowa, September llth, l9l7. August 29th he fell from a tree while gathering apples and suffered internal injuries which caused his death, after eleven days of suffering.  All that could be done to ease his suffering was done.  Dr. Willard Jeffries came Friday from Chicago, with the intention of performing an operation in the hope of saving his life but he found the patient's condition was too serious for it to be undertaken. MR. CUMMINGS removed with his parents, to Decatur County in the spring of l856.  He was united in marriage to MISS ANNA MERRITT, August 29, l875.  The day of his accident was the forty-third anniversary of their marriage. To them were born five children, four of whom with the widowed mother survive, as follows: ALBERT B., Kansas City, Mo.; JOHN ARTHUR, Greybull, Wyo.; MRS. C. JEFFRIES, Chicago, Ill.; and CECIL G., of this city.  The oldest child died in infancy.  Two brothers and one sister also mourn his loss:  W. JENUS and J.R. CUMMINGS, of Davis City and MRS. MARY HANKS, of Pomona Kan. After his marriage, MR. CUMMINGS engaged in farming near this city, moving to town in l902. In the death of MR. CUMMINGS, the community loses one of our best citizens and most exemplary men.  He was a kind and indulgent husband and father and a loyal friend.  He will be sadly missed. Early in life he united with the Baptist Church, but later became a member of the Christian Church, in l883.  He was a member of the I.O.O.F. and Rebekah Lodges. Funeral services were held Wednesday p.m. at 2:30 at the M.E. Church, Wm. J. Campbell, the Christian Minister, officiating.  Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.  The I.O.O.F. had charge of the services from the church to the grave, where they went through the ritualistic ceremony.  The floral remembrances were many and beautiful. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --

    1. Merritt-Wood marriage??
    2. Doris
    3. I'm looking for a possible connection through marriage or other very close relationship of a MERRITT & a WOOD. I have been researching a MERRITT WOOD, b.1794-97 , Buckingham Co VA....who was in GA by 1818.... His military papers indicate he enlisted in VA. in 1813 & was discharged 1816.... This would have made him very young, and casts some doubt on the dob given by him on the military record. I've been told by another researcher that they have seen a MERRITT/WOOD marriage in the 1700s, but I've not been able to track it down... Any help is appreciated.... <>< Doris....A Texan in Georgia..... Still shaking the family tree and dodging the nuts after 30+ years! IBSSG

    1. Sarah and son William Merritt
    2. Rich Bixby
    3. My grandmother's parents were William Merritt and Adelaide Fuller. He had lived until 1984, when he was 97 years old. Social Security Death Index confirmed the lifespan, and provided his date of birth (24 May 1887). My grandmother was born in Plaistow NH in 1923, so I looked in Plaistow's 1920 census images on Ancestry.com, and found William and his family there, as follows: Merritt, William O., (head) age looks like 30, but should read 32 or 33. Merritt, Adelaide C, (wife) age 27 Merritt, Ralph M., (son) age 7 Merritt, George W., (son) age 5 Merritt, Alfred S., (son) age 3yrs 5 months Merritt, Frank E., (son) age 6 months Place of birth for the last two boys is New Hampshire, the rest Mass. My mother confirmed that these were the names of her uncles. Knowing that William was born in Massachusetts, supposedly Newburyport, I looked there in 1900, but did not find him. Looking in the surrounding towns, I finally found his family in West Newbury, MA, as follows: Merritt, James W. born Apr 1851 in MA, parents Canada (Eng) Merritt, Sarah E. (wife), born MA, parents MA Robinson (blurry), Harry F. (stepson) born MA, parents ME/MA Merritt, Walter E. (son) born Jun 1885 Merritt, William O. (son) born May 1887 Merritt, Gertrude M. (daughter) born Mar 1890 Merritt, Jennie E. (daughter) born Feb 1892 Merritt, Frank E. (son) born Jul 1985 Merritt, Warren W. (son) born Oct 1897 Merritt, George E. (son) born Oct 1899 Imagine my surprise today when I went back to the Plaistow 1920 census and found that Sarah, Frank and George were also living in Plaistow in 1920 (and I had thought at first they were unrelated), renting from an Alice C. Glover, and (on the census at least) just one house away from great-great-grandparents from my father's line (Albert M and Bessie W Tozier). I have not found the Merritt family in a 1910 census yet - they're neither in Plaistow nor West Newbury in that year. And I haven't som far found James Merritt in 1880, either. But I'm hoping that folks on this list could help with: 1) Maiden Name/Parents for Sarah 2) Details of Sarah's first marriage 3) Parents for James/Birth info 4) Date of death for Sarah, James 5) Whether there is a familial relationship to Alice Glover. If not, I'll keep plugging away on census images... Rich Bixby

    3. Hello and Happy New Year to all Merritt researchers. I am hoping to contact any descendants of Frank (Francis) Merritt who was living at 347 Euclid Avenue, in the Borough of Brooklyn, City of New York in 1900. Frank Merritt was a brother of my great grandfather and was born on 15 October 1849 in Peckham, Surrey, England. His parents were Francis Merritt - wine merchant and Anne Kerr. According to the 1900 US Census, Frank immigrated to the States in 1870, married in 1882 a 'Sarah E.' (who was born in New York in 1861) and had four children - Sadie, Albert, Benjamin and Crawford. I have a family photo taken in 1911 of Frank's family in New York, when my great grandparents went from Australia to visit them. In the photo are two babies - presumably Frank's grandchildren - who may still be alive today in their nineties. And hopefully they may have had children, who will be my generation. Any help to trace this family will be greatly appreciated. Susan Grant Melbourne, Australia.

    1. Veterans Day
    2. Ken Jackson
    3. Veteran's Day 2001 There are a small handful of times during the year when I switch to a serious topic. Veteran's Day is one of those occasions that is very important. In the United States, Veteran's Day is November 11th (this is also Remembrance Day in Canada). The official observance in the United States this year is November 12th. Please remember that this day is not to honor war, but rather to honor the sacrifice made by others for our freedom. What we call Veteran's Day is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice in the Forest of Campiegne by the Allies and the Germans in 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). This signified the end of World War I and was originally known as Armistice Day. President Woodrow Wilson signed the Congressional Resolution on Nov. 11, 1919, the first Armistice Day. However, after World War II, the day began to lose meaning and since there were many other veterans to consider, the decision was made to change November 11th to honor all those who fought in American wars. The United States Congress passed an act to change the name to Veteran's Day and in 1954 President Dwight Eisenhower signed the act. - Tom Ellsworth (HM2 USN 1965-69) WHAT IS A VETERAN? (Attributed to a Marine Corps chaplain, Father Denis Edward O'Brian) Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye. Others may carry the evidence inside them, a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in the refinery of adversity. Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell a vet just by looking. What is a vet? A vet is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel. A vet is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th Parallel. A vet is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang. A vet is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come back at all. A vet is the drill instructor who has never seen combat - but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account punks and gang members into marines, airmen, sailors, soldiers and coast guardsmen, and teaching them to watch each other's backs. A vet is the parade-riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand. A vet is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by. A vet is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep. A vet is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come. A vet is an ordinary and yet extraordinary human being, a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs. A vet is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more that the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known. So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say, "Thank You." That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded. Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU". There are several web sites that have electronic cards specifically for Veteran's Day. They are: Blue Mountain Arts <http://www.bluemountain.com/eng3/military/> Yahoo! Greetings <http://greetings.yahoo.com/browse/Holidays/Veterans_Day/> This year, the Department of Defense has placed a moratorium on mail addressed to "Any Servicemember." In the past, this was a way for people to share their thoughts with and give support to our men and women in the service. These letter-writing campaigns have always been a morale booster, however recent mail-related attacks have resulted in additional precautions and the safety of servicemembers is paramount. Please visit the Department of Defense <http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Oct2001/b10302001_bt556-01.html> website as they have alternative suggestions of ways in which people can show their support for our military personnel. Normal mail delivery addressed by name to individual servicemembers will continue uninterrupted.
