    1. Merritts of Sevier County, Tennessee
    2. Guy Merritt
    3. Do any of these names match your "Merritts"? In the 1830 Sevier County census is a William Merritt family. In the 1840 Sevier County census are two William Merritt families. William T. Merritt[1813-1903] in 1850 Sevier County Census. William T.[37] is listed with his household: Margaret[27], Minton[12], Mary[11], Elisabeth[9], Sarah[7], Amanda[6] William[2], and William[96]. The William[96] is listed as birth place, New Jersey. All the rest born in Tennessee. There is also a neighbor listed, Anna Merrit[80],birthplace-Ireland. There is also oral history that William T. served during the Indian Removal and that his brother married a Cherokee girl. I do not know the brother's name or where he settled. The only other Merritt in the unit with William is Alexander Merritt. Listed in the 1860 Sevier County census is William T. Merritt [45], and household; Elizabeth [40], Lafayette [11], Samuel [9], John [7], Esther [?], Martha [4], Julia [4], Malinda [2] James [31/2] Listed in the 1870 census is William T. Merritt[55], Elizabeth L.[45], Samuel[19], John A.[16], Hester A.[17], Julia A.[13], Martha A.[13], Matilda A.[11], James[10], and Eliza{4]. Listed in the 1880 Sevier County census is William T. Merritt's son, John Merritt. John A.[27], Elizabeth[28], Mary A.[9], Samuel H.[5], George W.[3], and William L.[11/2]. William T. Merritt's son, William L., had a son, Frank Lafayette Merritt, who is my grandfather.

    3. Hi all, I have included three surnames with the hopes that anyone with these names in Florida will get in touch. One interesting is David Sloan Lanier! Note also Lakeland is in Polk Co. The whole Hillsborough Co. area changed and became 6 or 7 counties. Some of the older listings will say Hillsborough Co. and will include Lake, Sumter and others in the exact same area as the county lines moved not the people. The web address is included at the bottom. They have address for the docs at 7.50 each OR included free you can download with Acrobat the PDF files of the original docs on line. I downloaded Wealthy Ann Sloan widow of William Futch and now have enlistment dates, her age and she never remarried at 51. Date of his date too. They seem to come alive when you find something! This was a thrill and I just wanted to share it. 1. Feeling Old?
    2. Jack Allen
    3. Just in case you weren't feeling old enough today, this will certainly change things. Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the Faculty a sense of the mindset of this year's incoming freshman. Here is this year's list: The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1983. They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and probably did not know he had ever been shot. They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged. There has been only one Pope in their lifetime. They were 10 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War. They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up. Tianamen Square means nothing to them. Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic. Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums. The expression "You sound like a broken record" means nothing to them. They have never owned a record player. They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong. They may have never heard of an 8 track. The Compact Disc was introduced when they were 1 year old. They have always had an answering machine. Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels, nor have they seen a black and white TV. They have always had cable. There have always been VCRs, but they have no idea what BETA was. They cannot fathom not having a remote control. They don't know what a cloth baby diaper is, or know about the "Help me, I've fallen and I can't get up" commercial. Feeling old Yet? There's more: They were born the year that Walkmen were introduced by Sony. Roller skating has always meant inline for them. Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show. They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool. Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave. They have never seen Larry Bird play. They never took a swim and thought about Jaws. The Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as WWI, WWII and the Civil War. They have no idea that Americans were ever held hostage in Iran. They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are. They don't know who Mork was or where he was from. (The correct answer, by the way, is Ork) They never heard: "Where's the beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel," or "De plane, de plane!" They do not care who shot J.R. and have no idea who J.R. was. Michael Jackson has always been white. Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not bands... There has always been MTV. They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter. Do you feel old yet? If you do, then pass this on to some other old fogies... Peace & God Bless

    1. Putnam Co., NY, 1800's, Gilbert, Amos, Joseph, Cornbury
    2. Hi, I just joined this list. Our Merritts are from Putnam Co., NY and vicinity (Dutchess Co., NY, Fairfield Co., CT). G-grandparents (in-law): Genevieve V. Merritt (6/15/1866, Brewster - 10/31/1955, Danbury) & Frank Sherwood; married in Patterson, NY Genevieve was also married later to Horatio McCann & William A. Birdsall. Genevieve's parents were James H. Merritt (2/2/1843 - 6/13/1878) - I think - and Anna Elizabeth Cottrell (12/24/1844, Patterson - aft 1899). I suspect James Merritt was a son of Cornbury Merritt (b. 1812 per 1850 census of Patterson) and Hanah (b. 1807). There was another James Merritt, only 2 years older, who was a son of Joseph Merritt, and was living right next door to the mother of the above Anna Cottrell in the 1860 Patterson census. I don't know of a relationship between Joseph and Cornbury, but there has to be a pretty close one. The name Cornbury (Cornby, Craneberry, etc) is unusual, and seems likely to derive from Tamer Cornbury, supposedly wife of William Merritt (1712, Westchester - 1807 Dutchess). Other Merritts in the Patterson vicinity at the time include Gilbert, Elisha, Amos, Caleb and Henry, along with various Williams. Is anyone else researching these families? Thank you. Glen Shelton River Ridge, Louisiana

    1. Ira Merritt, 1894 - 1880
    2. Ron Merritt
    3. I recently found the obituary for Ira Merritt (son of Wilbur Jerome Merritt, 1863 - 1939) published in the "Wenatchee World" newspaper, March 3, 1980: "REPUBLIC - Ira Merritt, 85, Republic, died suddenly Thursday, in Madras, Oregon, while visiting his son, Ira J. Merritt. He was born September 8, 1894 in Duluth, Minnesota, and at the age of four, he moved with his family to Mexico, where his father was engaged in mining. They later moved back to Duluth. In 1901, Mr. Merritt moved with his family to Townsend, Montana. On the trip from Duluth to Townsend, by Great Northern Railroad, the train was held up and robbed by Kid Curry and his gang. Mr. Merritt graduated from Townsend High School in 1913, and later attended the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. In 1916, he married Lessie Schriener at Shelby, Montana. They farmed in Townsend until 1942. Mr. Merritt left Montana in 1942, and moved to Seattle, where he worked in the defense plants. He moved to Spokane in 1945, and in 1946, he came to Republic, where he spent the rest of his life. When he first moved to Republic, Mr. Merritt was engaged in logging with his son for several years. He later worked in the sawmills in the Republic area. Mr. Merritt was a Ferry County Commissioner for 12 years, belonged to the Chamber of Commerce, was past president of the Eagles Lodge, chairman of the local Democratic Party, a member of the Republic Cemetery Association, the San Poil Grange and the Easy Riders Snowmobile Club. He was active in community affairs and spent many years working on and promoting community projects, including an airport, which was later named Merritt Field, after him. Survivors include one daughter, Kay Hoxsey, Spokane; five sons, Everett of Republic, Sylvan of Cle Elum, Ira J. of Madras, Oregon, Lester of Boise, Idaho, and Cash of Republic; 28 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lou, in 1940 and his wife, Lessie, in 1958. Bergh Funeral Service, Oroville, is in charge of arrangements." permanent email: [email protected]

    3. Charity Arseeny (Arsenia ?) Merritt, born 1822 to Luke Merrett (Merritt) and Elizabeth Slone(Sloan or Stone?) married Hiram Hall who was born 1812 in Carroll County, Georgia. One of their children, Tyre (George) or (George)Tyre Hall married Nancy Arsenia Chance. One of the children of Tyre Hall and Arsenia Chance was Mary Amanda (Mollie Ann) Hall, born 10-6-1869 and died 8-20-1906, who married Oscar Samuel Hammond. Arsenia Chance was a child of George W. (or M.) Chance who married Elizabeth Briant(Bryant?) who was born 7-15-1818. George's parents were reportedly Eamon (or Cannon) Chance and spouse Nancy. Arsenia was one of eight children including Cannon B. Chance, born 4-15-1837, and three . Nathaniel, James and Josephine, who married Cochran siblings, Sara, Martha and Charles. Can anyone identify the ancestors, in addition to Luke and Elizabeth Slone Merritt, of Charity Arseeny Merritt? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, May 03, 2002 11:01 AM Subject: MERRITT-D Digest V02 #11

    1. Merritt Family of Granville, N.S (More)
    2. Rich Bixby
    3. I realized that I have not posted about my Granville, N.S. Merritt line to this list (I have elsewhere, though): 1) Nehemiah Merritt, a Loyalist, probably from New York, married Phebe Mullineux in Granville, NS in 1785. 2) James Merritt, born 1789 Granville, married Rebecca Leach. 3) William H. Merritt, born 1822 Granville. By 1850 Census, he is found in Newburyport, Mass., married to an Elizabeth born in N.S. In 1853, he (re)marries Esther Frost, born Yarmouth, N.S. (her family had also relocated to MA) 4) James W. Merritt, born 1851 (mother Elizabeth), Newburyport, Mass. Married Mrs. Sarah Robinson, maiden name unknown. I am hoping that the Granville book I mentioned will answer two questions for me: 1) The origins of Nehemiah, and of his wife Phebe Mullineux. 2) The identity (and origin) of William H. Merritt's wife Elizabeth, which is a major puzzle, because: A) The Frost family genealogy that told me that Esther Frost married William H. Merritt in Newburyport also says his parents are James and Rebecca. B) A probate abstract for Annapolis County in Nova Scotia states that in 1849 a William H. Merritt of Granville was granted guardianship of the children of Cornwall Merritt, based on an 1841 document Cornwall drafted, indicating he wished his brother William to be guardian, naming Nehemiah as his father, and Elizabeth as his wife, and that the three children are Rachel, Haley and Cornwall. In 1861, Rachel and Haley report to the court that their mother has married their father's brother, and the family was moved to the U.S. and their mother has since died. C) Granville Vital Records found on familysearch.com indicate that Nehemiah and Phebe also had sons named William and Cornwall, born 1796 and 1806, and has a marriage record in Granville for William to an Elizabeth McGregor in 1822. It does not have marriage records for Cornwall, or for William H. D) The 1850 Census entry for 29-year-old William Merritt has 29-year-old Elizabeth as his wife, and Rachel, Haley and Cornwall as the oldest children present, each born in Nova Scotia. Three more children are listed after them. E) Another William Merritt from Nova Scotia is found in the 1870 Census for Newburyport, at the right age to be Nehemiah's son (and William H's uncle and Cornwall's brother), married to an Elizabeth from Nova Scotia, and in the 1880 Census this William is found in Merrimac, Mass, at the home of George Merritt, whose age matches the familysearch.com birth record for a George Merritt born to William on familysearch.com. William H. is pretty clearly the nephew of the Cornwall Merritt who is son of Nehemiah, not the brother William, but the presence of Elizabeth, Rachel, Haley and Cornwall in his 1850 census entry makes me think that William H. might have been the one to be appointed guardian and marry Elizabeth, and the children were either told that he was their uncle, not their cousin, or they maintained the fiction. But I don't have the proof I need to show that William H. married his aunt. If the Elizabeth who is there in 1850 is not William H.'s wife, then I don't know who the mother of James is, since it is not Esther Frost. In order for the uncle William to have married Cornwall's Elizabeth, the following would have needed to happen: A) Elizabeth (McGregor) Merritt dies before William married Cornwall's Elizabeth. B) Cornwall's widow Elizabeth dies by 1861. C) Uncle William married a third Elizabeth before 1870 (since he's married to one in that census) D) Nephew William married a fourth Elizabeth, who died (or divorced) before 1853, when he married Esther. I find it far easier to believe that there were just two Elizabeths, than to believe that there were four. Nice little puzzle, isn't it? I just need a couple of marriage records (Cornwall's and William H.'s) to clear it up. Do the "Revised Merritt Records" say anything about this group of Merritts? Rich

Rich >> ----------------------------------------------- Hi Rich, While I'm interested in the Merritt connection here, I REALLY interested in your BIXBY connection. Hope your Merritt and Bixby line connect, as mine do. Rebecca JACOBS, born about 1784, married a Mr. ? Bixby. Their daughter Mary Rebecca BIXBY, born abt 1805 in Quebec, married Richard HAY abt 1820 at St. Andrews, Argenteuil, Que. Richard died probably before 1851. Mary Rebecca died 4 Oct 1844 in Que. They had several children including Margaret Rebecca HAY, Sarah HAY, and Hannah HAY. Margaret Rebecca HAY (my great grandmother) was born 20 Aug 1835 in Que. Married Alfred MERRITT 29 Aug 1854. Alfred MERRITT was born 6 Jan 1835 in England. He was a blacksmith and carriage maker. I'm not familiar with the book you mention. I'll try a search. My Merritt line came from England (Alfred MERRITT's parents may have been (not sure) William MERRITT and Harriet HILSDON) to Quebec and then Ontario, Canada. Later to Nebraska, and still later Oregon. Since I don't know exactly when they immigrated, I suppose it's possible they could have located in Nova Scotia. Alfred may well have immigrated as a young man. I believe he was apprenticed to Joseph? Palliser, a blacksmith as a teen ager. Does any of this seem to match your line? Hope we can find a connection here. Alice
