1. [MEREDITH-L] MEREDITH, Capt William + HENRY, Elizabeth mentioned here
2. I need some enlightenment. Posted by: Doyle Sanders Date: February 18, 2002 at 15:01:41 of 1891 http://genforum.genealogy.com/m/meredith/messages/1718.html I am descended from Joseph "Old Joe" Meredith and Nancy Skaggs, d/o of Charles Skaggs and his wife Lucinda "Lucy" Thompson, d/o of John and Mary Thompson. I am running into a lot of family lore that is going up the works and I hope someone can straighten out and send me in the right direction. I know that the Meredith's lived in a county where the county courthouse and records were burned during the Civil War. I hope some have survived in other counties and that someone has found some still extant. There is a very prominent Meredith family in eastern Virginia before and during the Revolution, and Colonel Samuel Meredith is mentioned in early Virginia Records as an officer in either the Virginia State Militia or a County militia. My family lore also states that Old Joe was born in Russell County, Virginia. This family lore further states he was the son of Capt. William Meredith and Elizabeth Henry. This family lore states she is the sister of Patrick Henry, but she is not, I do not know who her parents are. I have been assured that it is not the sister of Patrick Henry as she married to someone else. Joseph Meredith may be the son of William, I just do not know. William was said to be the son of Samuel Meredith, but again this is family lore. Again, in this dialogue Samuel was the son of either Richard or Thomas Meredith. A Capt. William Meredith fought in the engagement at King's Mountain. Katherine Keogh White published originally in 1924 mentions him in “The King’s Mountain Men.” Reference is made to him being "...born in Louisa County, his parents coming from Wales. On the Yadkin he was a neighbor to Colonel Cleveland and commanded a company under him at King's Mountain. He went into the war at the beginning. Afterward he taught school. He died on the Tugalo River." I do not see how this could be the same William who went to Kentucky. Somewhere along the line Joseph "Old Joe" Meredith is also known as Joseph Abraham Meredith. Does anyone know any more about this Kentucky line of Meredith’s? Any help would be greatly appreicated. Notify Administrator about this message? Followups: Re: I need some enlightenment. Pat Ralston 4/09/02 Re:Joseph Abraham Meredith of VA and KY Bill Vincent 2/24/02
